greasing u front joint with needle

Anyone ever tried this.. I posted this the 1st time in the 6.7 section by accident trying to locate the area to be greased on the front drive shaft.. Someone posted the pic for me & advised me to buy a grease needle. I bought the needle & gave it a shot.. It appears that you have to pincture a metal cap to be able to put the grease in.So, I screwed up the 1 st needle. I was able to get a hole in the cap with a small punch. Stuck the new needle in the hole & tried to pump in the grease.. There's no way to know if any grease got into the area or not. It seems like most of the grease just came out around the hole... Anyone else have any luck trying to grease this area ?

You should not have to puncture anything...there is a flush fitting (and it's a pain the first few times until you find it). You'll know when you get grease in there because you'll hear it squeezing through.
Try a headlamp and jack up one tire to turn it...you should be able to see where you need to insert the grease. After you get it, mark it with a paint pen (do not use a scribe).

In the past I've always used the injection needle instead of the cone tipped larger needle because the injection needle actually fits into, and through, the eyelet and always gets grease in the u-joint on the first try. Unfortunately, the last time I went to grease the u-joint, I broke my injection needle because its pretty fragile with as small of a needle that you need to get into the eyelet. I went to Advance Auto to replace it, as that's where I got the original one. I got home with the new one only to find out that they had made the needle slightly bigger (change the size from about 20 or 21 gauge to 18 gauge), and this one wouldn't fit now. So, I then went and bought a cone tipped needle and all that did was spew grease all over the place and make a mess. I tried to find the size needle I needed but unfortunately all the other stores I went to had 18 gauge needles as well. The only place I could find the size needle I need was on Harbor Freight, so I order 3 packs so I could have back ups. They should be here sometime today or tomorrow so we'll see what happens.

I'am sure I found it. One of the other guys posted a pic.. Mine has something metal that had to be punctured the 1 st time . I bent the 1 st needle until I punched a hole in it. It seemed like a tin . Just hard to tell if any grease got to the area or not

I don't think my '03 has that fitting. I used a needle, the sharp kind and got some grease under the rubber seal part of the CV joint.

I believe it should have it, but don't hold me to it. It can be hard to find, it took me forever the first time because it was covered in old grease and it blended right in with the seals. Clean it off with a cue tip and it's a lot more visible.
