Post Governor Arm Adjustment

Recently I have had an odd thing going on. From a dead stop if I let out the clutch and the RPM drops below 750, I get what I think is full fuel off the line with thick black smoke and a good pull. If I give it a little throttle, its as usual with the AFC lag, little smoke and then it gets going with boost.

Last night I pulled my AFC housing and I found that my governor arm was touching the fuel plate just fine, about 0.125" from the bottom of the tip of the plate. However, I noticed that the top of the governor arm had a wear pattern on it. So , the low RPM pulls were having my governor arm going underneath the AFC cam and then hitting the plate. Needless to say the governor arm adjustment is not only for plate engagement, but also for AFC engagement.. Just some interesting findings.. I hope that having the govenor arm ramming up against the AFC didn't do any damage. I adjusted the arm up another 0.125" and will have to see if that takes care of it. Also I wanted my peak fueling from the #10 closer to 1800 instead of 2K. (another reason to love the mechanical pumps, try to adjust fueling on a box!)

Oh, and adjusting the governor arm is easy for anyone wanting to do it. Just remove the fuel filter first and save your knuckles.

Mine did the same when I bought it. They put a #10 plate in but never adjusted the arm. Kept riding under the plate; but if I tried "stalling out" the truck when I took off, it would get up on the plate and haul *****. Adjusting the arm fixed it right up.

And make sure you tighten the snot out of that %@$#@&*% locknut holding that screw in there.
