got the smarty, what next?

Just got my smarty POD and gauges in, havent tried to go over the 60 hp setting, too afraid to cook the tranny. I have a afe cai, gonna wait till i get the turbo to upgrade the exhaust.

My plans for the truck are a twin setup from mpi, head studs, fass pump and maybe a few other things. I plan on using the truck for towing mostly and some normal driving. I wanna be able to haul my 28 ft travel trailer and quad easily without having 1600 on the pyro.

My question is what kind of transmission upgrades am i gonna need ? Is the 8 thousand dollar build what i need? Im not sure what kind of power ill have with a twin setup and the programmer, My goal is to keep it all reliable.

A friend of mine who is a mechanic said all i should need is a tq converter, valve body and shift kit????? seems like there is more too it than that from what ive been reading.

Anyone have any ideas what kind of power ill be pushing? or what is necessary for that power? Feel free to suggest anything else that would work well for what i am looking for

thanks

Well your friend is right as long as your not doing boosted launches at the truck, or hammer the tranny hard and just stomp on it other wise, I'd get billet shafts.... "IMO"...

Your tranny requirements will depend entirely on the power you plan to make. It sounds like you may get near 550-600 hp. There are many threads around here on this. Plan on TC and valve body (from the same builder), several small billet parts including second gear band lever, strut, and anchor. You will also need a billet front servo cover. This would be a good time to also upgrade the flex plate. You will definately want a billet input shaft. The output shaft will depend on how you plan to use the truck: boosted launches will require it. Don't worry about the intermediate shaft.

you do not need an 8000 dollar trans. get a billet input, maybe an output, pretty muc heverything that bigdogjeepin said. depending on how many miles you have you might just want to do a rebuild of your trans goerend and dtt seem to be the favorite on this site

I have owned 2 twin turbo trucks with autos now and IMO you need to build the best tranny you can for what you want to do with it TOW
If you go cheap here it will cost you more in the long run...gaurenteed!
Pick the flavor (builder) you want and listen to their recommendations after you tell them your goals, I doubt any of the reputable big shops will send out just a valve body and converter for a tow rig with twins. Unfortunately us Canucks dont have the options that our US neighbours have for builders so our prices are much higher but its the price we have to pay to play.

Aside from all the taxes you guys pay, isn't a DTT upgrade comparable in price? No shipping or traveling too far for you either.

Yep, taxes and exchange. I have seen our exchange as high as 55% when I was building my first 98. With our stronger dollar now I guess it wouldn't be so bad.

If you are looking to keep it reliable LEAVE IT STOCK. But it you are like me and can't do that then I agree that you should do it once and do it right. Don't try to save on the tranny and do it in steps. You will break your input and your flexplate (i did both). The best thing to do is a fuel system upgrade with a 2 mic filter setup to save those injectors (on my 3rd set w/55k on it) and NO pressure box on the street! I pull my 20' enclosed trailer with ease bully dog on 50hp tow setting, no smoke at all never goes over 1200 up the hills.

ok, so DTT is in BC correct? What does a full tranny build from them run? Im prob only gonna be towing with 450-500 hp tops considering thats all the engine will withstand if im lucky. Anyone have any experience with DTT?

Dave04600, Can i get a fass setup for my truck? I burn "dirty" fuel from site here, and change my fuel filter regularly, Maybe that should be my next upgrade... before tranny?

Ya call up Peak Diesel and get a FASS with the 3mic filter. No problems with the FASS systems we have. With real filters you won't have to change it every oil change.

I second that recommendation also, talk to Harry hes a stand-up guy.
He can also give you a couple of other options for the transmission as well.

I just spoke with DTT about a complete tranny on friday.
The cost for there tranny under 450 HP is around 4,600.00 and over 450 HP is 5,100.00, with your core.
