Gooseneck

I want to put a gooseneck hitch in my new truck. It is a 2003 quad cab short bed. I found one of those plates down at the farm store, with the ball already attached to it already. If I were to get that how would I mount that up on the truck. Someone told me that you dont want to bolt to the top or bottom of the frame cause it will weaken the frame. What I thought about doing was bolting a piece of angle iron on both sides of the plate and the bolt it to the inside of the frame. I would use grade 8 bolts on each bolt. Another concern I have is if I did bolt it the the inside of the frame is there a chance i could crush the frame together. Also where could I find the diminsions on where to cut the the hole in the bed and where to mount it on the frame.
Any Help is great Sam

The only ***** I have seen mounted on flat stock were welded directly to the frame.

I had to buy a mounting kit for both the draw tite and B&W GNs I have used.

I'd really recommend getting a B&W that will bolt right up and is engineered so as to not negatively affect your frame

I think unless you have alot of time on your hands that's the easiest way to get a hitch in

if you have "alot" of time then you can drill holes in the angle iron, bolt it to the frame and bolt or weld the plate to the angle iron,

I would not recommend welding the angle irons to the frame, you'll just have to measure to cut the hole however most plates like you describe I've seen have been placed on top of the bed with holes drilled through the bed into the angle iron below and then bolted, there will probably be some "crush" to the bottom of your bed as the bed supports are not meant to hold the weight of a gooseneck

I just get a B&W kit, simple install anyone can do

My Pop-Up hitch came with instructions that said where to drill the hole in the bed.

Welding to the frame and bolting to the top flanges are both not advised.

I have helped some friends install B&W hitches. I was very pleased with the parts provided and methods of mounting each brand (Pop-Up & B&W).

It's definitely worth it, I have one and love it.

My favourite gooseneck hitch so far, a few tucks ago I had the ball on the plate style like you are talking about and I wouldn't reccomend it.

I have always had them welded in, either 1" plate or 4" channel inside 6" channel and some 3/8" plate down the side of the frame. My 07 has the b&w because we're not supposed to weld anymore. B&w is nice but it has just a little space between the ball and sleeve and it pops when you take off or stop.

I have the B & W with the 5th wheel attachment so I can pull anything! Best choice out there and after shopping all over the net I bought one from a Dodge dealer in Vegas that is now out of business.
