Which way to go?

Im looking into buying a 98-02 24v 4x4. I hoping that yall will point me in the right direction. Ive been told to stay away from the 98-99 year models as they have bugs in them as well as any other first year engines. Is this true or are they all the same. I cant decide between a auto or a 5spd either. What are the max HP before upgrading a auto, what is the max Hp and torque when you replace the VB and TC? What is the stock limit of a 5 spd? I assume if you upgrade to a HP 13in clutch the worries are gone.

What is a Good HP and torque range to stay in with dependability in mind? Is 350 HP to much to ask?

Ive also read a fass fuel system or something similar is in order to keep your injection pump from failing and have the proper fueling.

Thanks
Tyler

well upon further research i saw that a stock auto tranny isnt good past 275ish HP. Im still curious to see what the longevity of an auto with a TC and VB will do? How much is a new TC and VB opposed to a clutch rated for 400-500HP?

Thanks

I just bought a clutch that will hold 450hp and 1000tq for $400. If you are going to be sled pullin, that price can jump up to over $1500. With an auto, you can expect to pay over $3,000. That will usually get you a 100,000 mile warranty no matter how much power you have. Most people who have a big name company build them an auto trans never have to do it again.

There will be no sled pulling in the trucks future. It will mostly be hauling a$$. My goal is to build a 2nd generation truck capable of out running the new powerstrokes my buddies are running (7.3 and 6.0). Im looking to find the sweet spot between HP/TQ and durability. I think after a certain point you begin sacrificing HP/TQ for engine life. I can see spending 3K for a transmission when you could have a $600 clutch and drive the truck into the ground without worrying about anything.

I have a 6 speed and love it

However, there is no doubt an auto is faster

A built auto is nice, but spendy

You cannot row through the gears quick enough with a stick

But I enjoy doing it anyways. Its fun!

I think the manual is better towing and driving in hilly/mountainous terrain. But.....

Think of it this way. It is only going cost $700-900 for a clutch. Also, keep in mind the 5sp are notorious for 5th gear falling off. Watch out. The 6sp is heavier duty, but slower shifting.

But in order to beat an auto, your going to need some extra hp. Extra hp = extra $$$

Pick your poison. I love rowing through the gears. I couldn't afford to buy a truck and put a $3500 built tranny in it. Hence, I have the manual.

But if your drag racing, the auto is better. For towing and normal driving, excluding city driving, the manual is probably better.

Just my 2 cents.

Looks like they got the auto/manual part covered, so,...

350 isn't asking much from these motors. The aftermarket is so strong nowadays that 350 is a walk in the park

There are a few things that can help prolong the life of injection pumps on the second gens, but they still fail sometimes even with good fuel pressure and additives . The 12 valve trucks would be less expensive, more reliable, and less expensive to bomb, I still <3 my '02 though
