Good grief.....major electrical boo boo

Alright so check this out, a few weeks ago I posted a topic about some electrical issues I was having with my truck. WELL I FINALLY FOUND THE CULPRIT!!!

Just to recap what happened I'll explain really quick. Washed the truck one day and when I left the car wash my ABS light and my parking brake light came on out of the blue........but everything still worked normal. So a little while later my right blinker started acting funky as well as some other things. Ok so you guys got the picture............now for the problem

I was walking out of my garage the other day and just happened to notice a couple wires hanging from the front of my truck. So I crawl under to take a peek to find that a big cluster of wires that run underneath the radiator SOMEHOW managed to come loose from there clip and jump into my fan

So now I have 13 wires that are ripped in half and I have to now re-wire them. GEEZ what are the odds of that happening.

So now to the funny part.........well somewhat painfull but funny After messing with the wires a little bit, I headed back to work and came home a few hours later. Well when I got home I notice that my drivers side headlight was real dim lit and nothing else was on. Well I figured that those wires had to be the cause of that so I reached under there not even thinking and got lit up like a dang christmas tree Hurt like a sumin a witch but was kinda funny at the same time.

But now I have to go sit under my truck for a few hours and fix all the dang wiring.........just what I wanted to do this weekend.

Just thought I'd share

~Nick

Hey just a heads up, before you touch anything on that truck make sure you unhook the battery first, oops to late.

ya no kidding, don't forget to do that next time.

and that is pretty dang weird of how they mysteriously got loose and got into the fan. those are some pretty weird odds.

well good luck getting everthing back together.

There are some lessons in life that you only need to do once. Not that I have ever done something like that myself

I had a squirrel build a nest on top of the fuse box on the front fender.
Ate thru about 2 dozen wires in the harness near the brake cylinder.
Good thing I work in electronics- took a lot of soldering and splicing to fix that mess!

Squirrel kept coming back, couldn't get rid of the little rodent. So one pre-dawn morning I ran out and fired up the Cummins without waiting for lite to go out.
Squirrel jumped out thru radiator fan with tail broken in a couple of places and missing a front leg. Still see him around some, but he doesn't come anywhere near the truck anymore!

Hmmm. Only high voltage I'm aware of in a CTD (greater than 14vdc) is from the AIRBAG squib trigger circuitry.. (IIRC about 300volts DC!)
Gosh, don't have anybody sitting in the front seats while you phart around with the wire splicing...
300 volts from a capacitor discharge circuit can "trigger" you too! Watch out because that circuit can flat put some serious ZAP in your crimpers and wire strippers... I'm pretty sure they have bleeder resistors to safely drain off the HV when the batts are disconnected.

Yeah, some folks are pretty sensitive to low voltage. My dad can get zapped by a small motorcycle battery. First time I ever got zapped was when I was working on my truck. It was hot out (and I sweat ALOT when it's hot), cotton T-shirt was soaked w/ sweat, and I leaned over 2,000 amps worth of batteries. Shocked so bad that I checked to make sure the nips were still attatched to my chest. Fender covers are pretty handy.

I've never had any problem with 12v but back when I used to do marine elecronics servicing, (radar, VHF, sonar etc) those boats had a 36VDC electrical system(42V on charge) . And if you were down in the hold and all sweaty like you describe, it could reach up and grab you when you weren't expecting it.

I remember I was sitting on top of my passenger battery playing with the turbo and I kept feeling a jolt in my rear end. For half an hour I kept feeling this jolt in my rear end and I couldn't figure out what it was. I figured it was a nerve telling me to get off of it or something. Turns out my leg was straddling both battery posts and with the sweat on it kept shocking me. Talk about an interesting feeling.

Well it just got done snowing here, so when I stuck my hand up there it was pretty wet and must have grounded on some metal.........it didn't hurt but gave me a couple real good zaps before I let go

And don't worry, them batterys are getting disconnected and everything so there should be no chance of anything happening.........or atleast I hope so

Alright well I got it all re-wired and everything is back to normal..........it was a royal pain to do so but I got er done!!

There were a couple wires in there that were the same color, so that was kinda nerve racking trying to figure out which ones to solder together......so I'm guessing I got them right
