I've seen the 40,000 - 50,000 hp versions of that engine on some of the newer container ships. Sutzer has been around a while and know how to build these engines. They use a small reduction to go from 100 rpm engine to about 75 rpm on the prop. The engine as you see from the pictures has no &quot;transmission&quot;. These are direct drive. The engine is air start and will crank and run in either direction. So when a ship is maneuvering and needs to go from forward propulsion to astern, the engine is stopped and then cranked in reverse. Two cycle engines are nice in that respect.

I just got off a APL ship the first of March.One engine B&amp;W 66,383 HP. 3 turbos about 7 feet high. turns 104 RPM and the ship 900 feet long goes about 24 knots.
