im about to get the factory nav. the one with the 6-disc built in. im just wondering if its any good. does it give good directions and or am i better off getting a aftermarket nav system.

I have the rb1 in my truck, it is a very good unit. Especially for the price. You must have a newer truck, and are talking about the rec unit. I dont have any particular experience with it, but I am sure it is good

I have the REC Nav system and I think it's great. If your destination is a rural area you often get a message that "Turn by turn directions are not available for this area". I was mad when I heard it say this on the first time I used it. Fortunately it still shows you how to get where you are going so it's no big deal. That only happens occasionally though. I like mine and I was happy that I didn't go with an aftermarket unit that I would have to mount on top of the dash. Most here will tell you just the opposite......
It took me about an hour and a half to install it too. Very simple.....

If you want the best get something large screen (5 or 7 inch), based on Garmin components and with the maps stored on internal memory (hard drive or flash). Kenwood makes a feature rich in-dash unit with Garmin software and GPS hardware. It may not be the right thing for you, but maybe an option you didn't know about.

I'm sure the dodge system is OK, and may be good enough for you, but you pay a lot for what you get. I think its only when you start using way points, searching for points of interests (motels, fast food), and upgrading maps that you start appreciating the Garmin software. As with any, there are some map errors, but the level of map detail is amazing and the most accurate... including many cow and deer paths .

If interested, do a forum search on kenwood and you will find much info on what it takes to install one of these.

I don't know how much your desire for a 6 disk changer complicates things
