Talking Good Deal?

Ok guys, i finally found the truck ive been looking for. Its a 98 2500 12v quad cab long bed 4x4. It was just recently painted a couple years ago and it looks like the guy has hardly drove it since. The only sign of wear on the truck is the driver seat is ripping just like every other one ive looked at. It has 135,000 but its an auto and in need of a tranny. So im going to swap it out for either a 5sp or a 6sp. He has a 6sp sitting there he said he would include for the price but i know the 6sp takes more modifications to install. Hes asking $12,000...should i go for it?

If the tranny is a NV5600 I would probably go for it. Note you will need a transfer case, heavy duty frame rail and driveshafts. The automatic trucks come in a Dana 70 rear end instead of the Dana 80 but I think you will be alright there. And the main thing, a good clutch and hydraulics.

With a bad trans? I think I would like to deduct the price of a rebuild from the asking price (to put towards a DTT or Goerands)

Ripped drivers seat on a 98? I haven't seen one WITHOUT that, so no biggie there.

i agree with P.J he should come off the price a little and then i would invest the money saved into a built auto.

Who puts out the best aftermarket auto? Other than DTT i beleive theirs is around $3700. How much do you think i'd have invested if i just had this auto rebuilt?

It's a good deal. I'd try to talk him down but otherwise just go for it. How much do you lose the first year if you were to buy a new truck? WAY more than the $2000 you bargain with him. If you really want a manual then that's personal opinion but a built auto is great! A fully built auto tranny with billet parts can run up to $7000 but I don't think you need to go all out. Like you said about $3500-4000 sounds right.

Thanks for all the info guys.. I went and gave him a down payment today, ill be picking it up thursday. Still undecided on whether to put the 6sp in or have the auto rebuilt. Ill be towing quite a bit with it and i also like the manual shifting keeps me awake. Ill git sum pics up soon as i get' er.
