Goin' from GEN 3 to GEN 2
To you who have the 2nd gen knowledge I seek. I am considering buying a 2001 Ram 3500 Dually 4X4 quad cab manual with 125000 mi. What issues should I be aware of about this year's faults? Any real benefits to this year?
Fuel system problems, tranny /clutch, brakes.
Any info would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks
Mike

Check the fuel pressure from the lift pump and have it checked for codes before buying. These trucks are known for the lift pumps to quit working which starves the VP-44 and kills it.

Sorry, duallies only came in a 3500 model. not 2500 duallies! probably a typo, but just makeing sure........................ braking, is not a big issue, if disc, great!, if drum, replace with chevy 1 ton brake cylinders. and have fuel pressure checked out befor you sign your name on anything!, if not much pressure, have them throw on a new lift pump. and 1 more thing........GET A FUEL PRESSURE GUAGE!!!

never had any problems with ours and if its a 3500 dually than it prolly has 4 wheel disc so ya dont have to worry 'bout anything
with that many miles the clutch is just wearin' in

Yea, I dont know about that, I have drums in the rear and breaking is just fine. W/ just 90k on my 01, the only issues Ive had worth talking about was with my fuel system. If it has a factory LP, and it still works make sure you toss it and go aftermarket when it quits on you. Other than that if it was maintained well, you should have very little to worry about. I had to replace my clutch, but only after I started Bombing it

Same here on drum brakes, no problem with them. If you pull a bigger type trailer you'll want a brake cont. anyway. Fuel system problems, inj. pumps and several lift pumps. Had to replace the APPS sensor. Vacuum pump seal went out once. Transmission was rebuilt w/ a new clutch installed(about 50% left at 150k or so). I'd say, like the others, test the fuel system and drive it. If it drives and shifts smooth w/ good fuel pressure(or maint. records that are verifiable) I wouldnt be scared of it, if it was a good deal.
