Getting a few more MPG from a 02 HO... EDMs
Im wondering if anybody has had any luck tweaking on these things and increasing the mileage into the 20-24 ball park like the old 12vrs got.
Im tickled with the mileage but at 17 & 18 when i baby it and 16 down the road at 65-70 there ought to be some tweeking i can do. i know i have discussed bombing this thing, but since its mainly a commuter and i am keeping my 12v for towing practicality should probably become a factor until the warranty is up. So changes that the dealership cant see are good.
My goal is to get her up to 20-23 consistantly, my 12v got 20 no problem at 65-70, both have the same size tires, tranny's and gears, and the 12v pushed alot more power.
now im more interested in getting this thing up to maximum efficiency. EDM's I wanted to go a little wild at 2.3's or 2.5s but Now im thinking more conservative, the design of the motor should make it more effiecient so how can i really increase mileage and really take advantage of this setup.
I know I maybe needing a diff turbo so slapping my 60mm hx35 with a smaller housing 14, like what was talked about before maybe a 12 might work, maybe thats too much air. I dont know. I do know i have gathered some great info on how to bomb this thing but i am going to wait like i said so for now my goal is to get 20-23 without batting an eye. Any suggestions.
So 33" tires w/Speedometer caliburated, 3.55s and a 4" exhaust, and BHAF is whats on there now. It has a ceramic Luk clutch rated to 450 HP out .

Maybe the EDM's would be a different story, but going from the stock injectors to DD2's on my truck (all the other mods in my signature were the same, except the clutch) cost me about 0.5 to 1.0 MPG when towing our 13,500 lb 5th wheel. Of course, the increased power was worth the tradeoff for my purposes.

I would say that Mach 1.5 and a larger housing would really help you, as would intake/exhaust.
If you can live with the slower spoolup, go to the 16cm housing. Otherwise, go with the 14. A boost fooler of some kind will be necessary, either a cheapie from Practical Solutions (~$130), or a mild box like an EZ, Puck, Van Aaken, etc. EZ is probably the most popular and available.
If you tow heavy (exceed max gvwr), then avoid the EZ with its aggressive timing-- although I wouldn't sweat it with smaller injectors. Just don't run big injectors with the EZ AND towing heavy-- the peak cylinder pressure is just too much and IMHO the timing too advanced.
With the 1.5s and an EZ, you should be set to tow any legal weight quite nicely.

By the way, my experience echoes Rusty's in that the DD2s cost me between 0.5-1 mpg. This is inevitable with a honed injector, and the bigger you go with honed injectors, the worse it gets.
I would say honed injectors are fine for 75hp or less, but any bigger and the EDMs are almost a need.
In other words, don't go bigger than DD2s or else look to EDMs!

That was one of the things i have re thought out in the last couple of weeks. im going to rebuild the ford and set it up with duals and a 7' flatbed for pulling gooseneck, that way this truck doesnt see the same abuse the ford saw. Why have two rigs that are maxed GVW all the time, its hard on em especially when this one is supposed to be my all around vehicle and then some. so instead this one will mainly be mileage and mild power Famous last words right. At least till i get tired of building the 12 valve
With the turbo should i stay stock on the HX35 or go to my hybrid setup when i match it to the exhaust housing?
