Getrag years

Is there much differance between years of getrags. I have a 93 getrag in my truck and have a chance to get a 90 getrag to rebuild and sit on the shelf. I thought there was some case problems with earler gets.

There isn't much difference. I believe the only differences are in the reverse idler gear, and the shifter stub.

Can this be up graded to a 93 idler and shifter stub?

I don't think so. The cases are different. The later cases have a double rib reinforcement cast into the side near the idler gear. Also the later top covers have a case vent.

I may be wrong here, but I thought there was no difference from the cases. They made ones with the ribs and the ones without.

I did have a case crack on me, that also was a ribbed case....just replaced it with a case without ribs. I was always under the impression that all these trans and shifter tops were interchangeable.

Well I'd take a close look at the '90.. The transmissions got swapped quite often in the earlier years on these trucks due to the production issues they had from the get go. If the one out of the '90 has the double rib on the side of the case above the idler gear "hump" then it is a later style case.
