Hey I'm needing to change oil in my getrag and I want to overfill it, I know you can overfill it through the shifter, but I would like to know if there are any other ways of doing so?

On a 2wd it's very easy. Go to the hardware store and get a 1/2" galvanized street elbow and put it in the fill hole pointed up. Use a small funnel and just pour the oil in from under the truck. When you have the 4.5 qts. in there, just put the fill plug in the elbow and you're all done.

Yes, 4.5 qts is about 1/2" below the top of the elbow on my truck. I made a little dipstick and hung it from the frame so I can check the oil.

Like Wanna says, pretty easy... Did mine this last summer. Up to this point it had not been overfilled.... The overfill quieted the trans down a little. Filling was a snap, just use a funnel with a opening that fits the street ell.

they sell a little hand pump (like a soap bottle) for like $5 at almost any auto parts store. i found that the hose fit perfect and tight in the top PTO bolt hole. i just hooked that up and pumped it in. the hose fits tight enought that you can actually pump up above the hole, then pull it out quickly and put the bolt in. can't remember if 4.5 qts is above that hole or not.

What about us guys who have 4x4's ? What tricks are there for us?

I think the PTO hole trick Miciahfied posted is your best bet. The 4X4 stuff gets in the way of the elbow-in-the-fill-hole trick.

On my 4x4, I used 2 elbows. One going from the fill hole to the back of the truck, then another elbow to go vertically up again. This gives you enough room to fill. I'd like to see a picture of Wanna's "dipstick" though. I really have no way to check mine, which bothers me. Would be nice to have a clear piece of pipe or something for the vertical section so a guy could just crawl under the truck with a flashlight and quickly see the overfilled level.

It's a bent piece of coat hanger wire, shaped like a "J". Real high tech.

I filled the trans with 4.5 qts., hung the wire in the elbow, pulled it out and used wire cutters to make a notch where the oil level was. The same setup would work fine for you.

I went a little farther and added an extension, with cap, to that street-ell.

I welded a dipstick in that cap.

I poured in FIVE quarts, then filed a FULL notch on my dipstick.

One thing to remember is your trans doesn't burn oil like your engine might. So if your trans loses oil then theres obviously a leak somewhere. A dipstick is the best thing for someone who has a leak but just doesn't want to fix it.

Edit: I guess its probably a good idea for 4X4 guys since tranny oil could leak into the t-case couldn't it?

If your truck is like mine there is oil from the blowby tube and minor miscellaneous oil leaks spread all over the bottom of the motor and trans. I check the oil in the trans and the rear when I'm under the truck for an engine oil change.

Has anyone on here tried using the garden sprayer filler trick? I'm told all you have to do is get a cheap plastic garden sprayer from WallyMart and remove the sprayer head. Then you get a tubing adapter fitting to go from the sprayers hose end pipe thread and attach a short piece of copper tubing or brake line and use that tubing to fill thru the top PTO cover bolt. I have sprayed grease based undercoating thinned with kerosene using this method.
