Gears

Does anyone know what gears would be in my truck? How does that relate to towing and MPG...good or bad?

Good question, is there a way to tell from the VIN code, I know mine is stock, and I spin around 2100 RPM at 60 MPH with the 6 speed, so I think I got 4.10's

You should find a factory sheet on the hood and it will tell you. If its gone then when you run 70 the rpm's should be around 2 if it has a 3:54's any higher rpm and it should be 4:10's

On my '99 it is printed on the stick on the bottom of the hood behind the grill. As for how it relates to MPG, as long as you keep the speed down the milage will still be good. Mine empty with 4.10 (before I regeared) gave me 21.5-22. I lost about 2 MPG due to either fuel quality or VP going bad which left me at 19.5-20. I never went over 60 MPH. I don't like to run the engine that high with a light load. I only have 1200 miles since I changed my gears and injector and only one tank has not had a gallon or more drained from it to T/S some other problems got 20.8 on that tank. I am sure it will improve once I quit playing with the Jammer 4 injectors. I think the 4.10 are better for in town traffic. They allow you to keep w/traffic better with less power. They're great as long as you don't go over 55 MPH. Obviously if you are patient they will make towing easier. Just be willing to go slower.

Randy

P.S. Some upgrades to your tranmission will do a lot for your milage and pulling ability.

Noticed last night that at 70 MPH the RPM is around 2200-2300 so I guess this means 3:54's The RPM was definately over 2 but not quite to 2.5.

Those are 4.10's if you are revving that high at 70 mph with an auto..either way, your build sheet will tell you.......that should be on the under side of the hood near the latch and it will state the ratio.....I'm not certain, but I thought it was 00 and later that had the build sticker on the inside of the glove box door?

Just checked under hood and in glove box but no sticker! I know the truck has been repainted (at least the doors, fenders and hood) so that is probaly the reason for no stickers. I was thinking I would be able to use the VIN and the dealer. Would this work. Not an important factor right now I am just curious.

Yes, the last few numbers in the VIN are only any good to the dealer.....these are the #'s that contain the info that will allow them to reproduce the original build sheet.
