Remove the driveshaft. Rotate both tires exactly one revolution in the same direction. Count the corresponding revolutions of the universal yoke.

Maybe this is too simple to work for you, but if you clean it up good, you may find the tag between two bolts on the cover. It would also tell the gear ratio...
It may be that someone has already removed it...just a thought.

Even easier is to rotate the tires 10 times and count the driveshaft turns. This was more accurate for me than just 1 turn. Helps even more if you have a freind to count driveshaft turns while you turn the tire.

If you can remove the cover, the number of teeth for the set is stamped on the ring gear. It will say something like 10-41, which would be 4.10 gears. Since it is out of the truck I would ask to do this, since you can also look to see if it is posi-trac or open.

Can't say that I've ever seen an 80 posi, but on most other ones you will see the edges of the clutch plates. if you can get a hand on a service manual I'm sure it will show them. Just got out my manual and it may be difficult to see, but if you turn from one end and the opposite end turns the same directionyour in luck. If you turn and it goes backwards it is an open diff. Should be some preload on the clutches I believe.

Re:What gears in Dana 80
Dana 80's did come with posi's but it depends on what year 1994-98 they used a Power lok basically Dana 70HD Powerlok with the ring gear bolt holes drilled for the bigger bolts after (The modified D70hd is what i am ruunning), in 1998 they changed to the Trac Lok. IMO, the power lok was 10 times better, cheaper to rebuild, adjustible and had better lock up characteristics than any of the trac loks that i have run.

Fastest and easiest way to ck gear ratio (if the tag is not accessible) is to spin the tire and count the turns. Never thought to do it 10 times, but makes more since when you are tiring to find the difference between say a 3.73 to 4.10. 37 revs to 41 revs....after being divided by 10. That has science all over it! ;D
