Gear swap tips?

I was posing in another thread and remembered that I plan on swapping gears in the next few months. (3.73s to 3.42s) I did install my front locker and don’t think I screwed it up too bad… for it has lasted for a year or so with no issues.

From what I’ve read setting up a ring and pinion is where we separate the men from the boys. I don’t know of any shops in my area that I would trust, so I’m going to try it myself. I mean, I can screw it up, don’t need to pay someone for that!.

Who has some tips to complement what I’ve found by browsing online.

I like to put a little bit of grease on the bearings when I replace them just to make sure they don't run dry. Get your pinion depth right and get your mesh set how you want it before you install your pinion seal.

I'm no pro at gears but I have setup many a set... The pinion is the hardest to get right for me. Take your time and go back and forth from computer to truck.

Bigger tire may be in my future too. I have a set of H2s that are ready to go on once I select some new sneakers.

I bought a pinion depth gage, so hopefully that will help. Sounds like some trial and error is in store. The front carrier isn’t that heavy, but I’ve been told the rear carrier has some heft to it.

I’m no where near Texas, or I might think about a shop like that.

An extra set of hands would be nice as the rear carrier is "hefty". If you have to do this without a lift, you can use a couple of beer flats to set the carrier on to slide it out from under the truck and back. I used another one to set the caps, bolts and retainers in with the box marked with the orientation of how they came out. Read the instructions, have the tools needed available and allow yourself plenty of time to be sure you do the job right. Be mindful to not get in to too much of a hurry when setting bearing pre-load. A little at a time, the preload will increase quickly when you get close. Don't ask me how I know this. Here is another set of instructions for you. http://www.yukongear.com/Downloads/T...structions.pdf

Disclaimer: I do not claim to be an expert at this, but I have done it with little prior experience and the job turned out good.
