Gear oils

Getting ready to change the front diff, rear diff, tranny, and tcase fluids in my 2007 5.9 4x4 6 speed manual.

According to the manual I need ATF +4 for the tranny and tcase... Is that right?? ATF in my manual transmission??? Also does anyone know the capacities? I could not find it in the manual.

For the diffs it says GL-5 75-90 weight synthetic.... Is synthetic required??
I read the capacities are 3 quarts front and 4 quarts rear... I found that on a search here. Do those capacities sound right???

Thanks,

That's accurate. My tranny took 6.2 qts. and the transfer case takes less than three I believe. Park on a level surface and fill until it just starts to weep out of the hole. Any 75-90 GL5 synthetic will do. Keep your receipts. 14mm wrench for the tranny. Genos has a great price on it along with other tools and filters.

I have Royal Purple in my diffs. I've also used Mobil 1 in the past. Both are excellent. Amsoil works great as well.

I tried Amsoil in my G56 in the hopes it improved the poor cold weather shifting. If anything it made it worse. I went back to regular ATF+4 last weekend. The ATF+4 has to meet Mopars specs, there isn't an advantage to paying any more than you have to for the ATF. The Mopar stuff at Wal-mart is the same quality as the Valvoline I used.

If you have a Harbor Freight near you, they sell a drain plug kit with about 10 different size/style sockets for about $10. The 14mm one used for the G56 is one of them.

Adding the ATF can be a pain, there isn't much room to get a bottle next to the exhaust. I bought a pump that fits a gallon jug. I pumped in 4qts and had to add a couple more to the gallon jug. It took about 6.5qts until it started leaking out the fill hole.

Thanks for the advice,
I picked up some amsoil synthetic gear oil for the diffs in gallon jugs, and a new pump, my old one is about 10-15 years old.

I got the cheap version of the atf+4 too. I am planning to put it in the gallon jugs after the gear oil change.

So the plug is actually a 14mm square sided socket adapter? That has to be one of the dumbest designs I have ever heard of. basic service should use basic tools. I do have a harbor freight about a 1/2 hour away, but I will probably just make a tool instead, I have a lot of scrap lying around and a neglected mig machine.
