What Gear To Dyno In ????

i have never dynoed a auto trans before, much less a diesel truck. i am going to the dyno soon to run some back to back tests on some products such as cat delete and heater grid delete as well as some different smarty settings.

this will be done on my stock wheels/tires, but i have no idea what gear i am supposed to make pulls in. do i get the speed up to around 55 in od and then stomp on it or do i want to be in a lower gear?

i have always done 3rd gear pulls in my 11 sec. allmotor honda, but this truck is completely different

When I dyno'd my truck they said they use OD so they can load the motor. I think it helps make more boost. It may matter what type of Dyno will be used.

It was fun and I am sure you will enjoy yourself.

Good Luck

I use 4th since that is 1 to 1 and should give the most accurate #s.

I run a standard but the guys with the autos just bring it up to speed and then roll into it. I dont know what a downshift will do to your #s. If you are running in the 450+hp range make sure they put a strap that holds you down, keeps you from spinning on the roller.

I actually just ran yesterday @ TVP in Dublin,Ca and I was told to run it OD. It makes for more accurate numbers. I ran it up to 55mph, when it locked in OD I hit my Lock/up switch and had them load the dyno to make boost then they unloaded the dyno and the run began. This was run on a DynoJet, don't know if there is a difference, but had a lot of fun...

IDK bout these trucks but on my silverado driveshafts are a common failure when the DS RPMS get this high. Some shops will not allow trucks to be in3rd or 4th (1 to 1) because of the RPMS unless a driveshaft loop is in place. They will make you put it in 2nd which will alter your numbers slightly, so will a mustang dyno.

FYI the bigger the tires the longer the reading on the dyno so will net you a hair bigger numbers. Same with gear ratio.

Do a search on TC/Lock-up and follow the instructions, they are good and will help you out. It is a great addition to trans control.... I highly recommend it.
