If yours is a standard, the only real needed gauge is pyro, it monitors the exhaust temp, and if you mod the truck its lets you know when get your foot out of it. The boost is fun to watch and does help with diagnosing probs.

my truck is an auto, what does knowing the exhaust temp tell me?? just when to get my toes off the pedal??and the boost is merley for fun to watch!?? I can see how that would be fun to watch, but is there any other benifet?? thanx

The boost gauge is a handy diagnostic tool. If, for instance, an intercooler boot were to develop a leak, the boost gauge would read lower than normal due to the air leak, letting you know that you should look for a potential problem. As for exhaust temp, it's pretty simple. The pistons in our engines melt at roughly 1300*F. The exhaust temp is a fairly accurate gauge of how hot the pistons are. Hold the exhaust temp gauge over 1300 for very long and you'll have liquid pistons. An exhaust temp gauge (pyrometer) is VERY cheap insurance.

I run 3 gauges pyro, boost and tranny temp, if its an auto, if your pulling big loads tranny temp lets you keep an eye on it. I referred to boost as being fun to watch, because its not really a needed thing, it can be of use, as was said.

Nice!! I think i'll have toinvest in some then.... is there a gauge that tells you the temp of the turbo??? I had a mechanic tell me i should let the turbo cool down after a long run before i shut it off... if so whats a good shut off temp??

Not that I'm aware of, but most just watch EGT when it drops after few min shut it off, theres also a cool down time, lets you shut key off and lock truck up, it shuts engine down after a cool down time.

the exhaust temp gauge (pyro) is going to tell you the approx turbo temp... you want to let it cool below the flash point of your oil... that way you don't get any buildup or residue in the turbo. i believe 300 or 350 depending on where your gauge reads. boost is for more than just detecting leaks... the more you turn it up the more it is an indicater of how soon you will need a head gasket, lol. it lets the more hopped up trucks know when they are getting close to the limit of safe boost, as many of us are!
