Gauges (rank order)

I'm going to get some gauges. Can someone please "rank order" (must have-to-nice to have) for me? I'm reading allot of "fuel" pressure links, so I'm guessing that's probably #1 (just need confirmation). I know what a "pyro" is (i think that's what tells me how hot my turbo is is). I also know what a "tranny" is (not sure what a good/avg temp is though). I DO NOT know what a "boost" gauge is, nor what # it should read (avg) nor what it measures. Is a "boost" the same as an EGR?(I'm pretty sure I know what that is...measures temp of exhaust coming out...but don't know what a good temp is. If you don't have time to explain, that's cool...rank order only will be fine and I'll do some more reading. Thanks any/all! -dan

A few more details about your truck would be appropriate, like what engine you have, what tranny, any mods.

For the 24v in stock trim, fuel pressure gauge is the most important. A 0-30 psi unit will suffice. Anything below 5 psi is getting dangerous.

Next in line is the pyrometer, which measures Exhaust Gas Temperatures (EGT's). The safe sustainable temp is 1250F in stock trim, but spikes beyond that for very short times is still ok. Depending on the timing, you can sustain these temps and still cause damage, so be aware when you start throwing more fuel and air into the mix.

If an auto, a tranny temp gauge would probably be a must have. No idea on temps, I'm not an auto guy. Someone else will have to fill in for me.

Boost gauge isn't a must have, but it is very handy for diagnosing problems, knowing how far you're pushing the truck, and it is the most entertaining gauge.

You can also have your oil temp, oil pres, water temp, drive pressure, etc. gauges, but they aren't required as the stock instrumentation will generally tell you if its ok or not. But doesn't mean they would be bad to have.

Ok quick lesson on gauges.
#1 fuel pressure / measures fuel pressure to the injection pump. Less than 5 lbs of pressure is bad.

#2 EGT gauge measures exhaust temp. Above 1300* is getting too hot

#3 boost gauge/ measured turbo boost pressure in the manifold. Less than 20 lbs for stock truck is normal.

Fill in your signature so we know what your truck is so to give better advice

for a 24v

1) fuel pressure
2)EGT (pyro)
3)Trans Temp
4)Boost

And to make ur signature permanent, go here

https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/forums/usercp.php

then goto signature, and then u can enter what u want and save it.
