Gauges dead

This has happened a couple of times I was ondering if anyone here had any suggestions. I took it to the dealer but $300.00 later it did it again. What happens is the gauges all quit and all the warning lights in the dash come on the odometer reads No Buss and the overhead console reads CCD. The dealer unplugged the overhead console and it worked fine for a while ( I left it unplugged for quite a while to confirm that was the problem) then it did it while it was unplugged. I did some checking wiggled some wires and fuses and the gauges came back. So thinking it was not the console I plugged it back in. This morning it did it again so I unplugged the console and the gauges are still dead I tried the wire and fuse trick again but did not work. If anyone knows anything else to try I would appreciate a response. From what I have read there are a number of things that can cause this I really don't want to go back to the dealer so they can search and find nothing again and spend another $300.00 for nothing.

I am having the same problem that you are. Have you done a search for this? There is a topic right now about the no bus. I have started putting diaelctric grease in the ecm and pcm, it might help. I guess the no bus is just from a bad connection somewhere or it could be a bad sensor. Good luck.

I've been reading everything I can find on bus links or clusters and from what I've read yours sounds like a bad instrument cluster. They say it starts as an intermittent problem then finally quits all together. You might try unplugging the connectors at the back of the cluster, this sometimes will get the cluster working again, however, it is only a temporary fix. Also it seems like I read about replacing the connectors on back of the cluster. I just went and checked to see if I could find where I read about changing connectors but I could'nt find it. I did ,however, find a recall about erratic instrument cluster operation. the recall number is 08 05 00 and was issued Apr of 00. I found it on dodgeram.org under TSB's. This info is not all inclusive but might help get you pointed in the right direction. Hope it helps.

Angry cluster

TXHOTSHOT /AZ i had mine do that dec of 02 and it was caused i think now from welding on the truck and not unhooking the batt neg cables.overhead said ccd and no bus on the odometer and all the gauges went wacko then quit.it cost me 50.00 cause my warranty covered the $644.00 pts and labor.part #is 56045681-ad .they would not let me have the old one either.if you hold in your odometer trip button and turn the key on with out starting the truck this will launch your trucks instruments into a diagnostics mode and it will test all of the instruments as you watch.kinda cool.then it will give you a code at the end. I can't remember what it was though. good luck with this .

Unless the problem causing the bus to go down is present, it's nearly impossible to diagnose. It sounds like you probably spent your money on quite a bit of time at the dealer. The BUS is the communication path between all the modules (computers). If there is a problem in any of them it can cause this problem. Problem is that when the bus is down your scan tool is basically useless. When the bus is down, and stays that way, you can unhook modules, and if the bus comes back up you may have found the culprit. On the intermittant side, if the problem shows up regularly, the best steps to take is to unplug one module at a time and basically wait and see if the problem comes back. My most recent experience with this was on a 97 and I had the customer drive for nearly a week with the central timer module unhooked before we were both comfortable in spending his money on a new one. Luckily it took care of the problem. I've also had anti lock brake modules cause this as well as a cluster or two. Sounds like for some reason the tech may have thought that the overhead may have been where the fault was. On your truck I would unhook the central timer module and drive it for awile and see what happens. It's located under the dash, should be directly above the accel pedal. Be forewarned that with the CTM unhooked you will lose your power windows, dome lamps, and some other convieniences. Oh yeah, hook the overhead back up.

I also forgot to add that everything is still dead so as I try things I can see if it helps.

CTM on my truck (01) is even with the go pedal up under the dash. 99 may be more toward the center hump. It has two connectors (guess of 2 8-10 pin connectors). If you unplug it and the over head shows up ok again and your cluster starts to work you may be on to something.
