The Gauge Thing, Part 2
OK, I have caved. I am going to eat humble pie .... Sort of.
I have decided to install a pyro, aka egt, not because I think I need it but
because, like everyone else, theres too m$ch at stake if I'm wrong.
Its a autometer sport comp series. I plan to do the "Motor Running" version
for the thermocouple rather than the "Motor off, dig out the chips w/ a magnet version, although I think both work equally effective. The site will
be appx. 2" above the turbo flange & to the left to miss the partition. This
seems to be the site of choice to catch the hottest gases (From the 4,5, &
6 cylinders) Have I missed anything or should I do something different?
After its in, I am going to report, from time to time, how hot I run under
different conditions. It will all be NORMAL driving....(Oops, we better not get
into that... )
I maintained in the 1st post concerning this (& still do) that if a person drives
conservatively with a entry level box or chip & doesn't hammer the crap out
of the throttle there is not a great concern for egt's.
As I report back I am going to disclose the mph, towing or not towing, etc.
I will be totally truthful in everything I come back with.
What is the danger area for egt's. I think I understand that minor skirmishes
into the 1300+ area are acceptable for several seconds & no towing-highway
speed should be 800-1000? Somebody please clue me in.

When I am towing I try not to exceed 1200* degrees but when I am unloaded and having fun I backoff at 1400*.
I installed my pyro using the "engine off" method about 30K miles ago and have had zero problems. I applied grease to the drill bit and tap and took it real slow.

Anybody else? I hear 800 for hwy/interstate speeds as normal, 1200 towing,
& 1400 goof off. Does this sound right? Has a poll ever been done on this?
Also, on the install, how do you get chips with a magnet if the install is done
in the vertical section just above the turbo? I can see how you would get them in the floor of the horizontal runners but looks like to me if you do it above the turbo they just fall down into the turbo like about 6-7" or so
& scatter all over the place down there.....Help my thinkin'...

I see anywhere from 600-800 highway unloaded and float around 1100-1250 loaded at 16500 GCVW. I will see around 1350 at times and I just take my foot out of it and it comes right down.
Oh, and a nice trick that I hadn't done with other gauge installs was to wire the gauge lighting to your dashboard light dimmer wire...it's nice to be able to dim those gauges when not really using them.

You'll be fine drilling with the motoring running. Drill your pilot hole then the final size. I didn't put any grease on the bit. I wanted the shavings free to blow away from the hole. I guess you could drill 5 or 10 holes working your way up to 7/16 but thats just more work. With the motor running the shaving will not fall in. You'll need gloves it gets hot & some safety glass's the shaving will be flying. You can drill & tap the hole in 10 minutes its not a big deal. Put some anti seize on the threads b4 you tighten it down.

The numbers you are seeing are right on for a stock turbo. I see 950-1000 towing at hwy speeds pulling 19K. By no mean is that nsafe, you just have to allow a little more time for cooldown at the end of the trip. I have never seen the need to leave the engine run duing the drill and tap phase of the probe installation. Use some grease on the bit, clean it a couple of times during the process, use a narrow magnet like one of those retractable ones, sweep it through the hole a couple of times and all will be just fine. When I get this thing in you can guide me over oompa-loopa pass while you
hold my hand ........ I had to turn AROUND on Pike's Peak about 8 years
ago.....Between the altitude, lack of oxygen, & me bein' scared s_ _ _ less, I'd
fared way better if I'd rode a to the top. Colo.Springs is VERY small from up there...
