Gale Banks in June 4wheel & Offroad

I know Gale Banks is a successful guy. Makes alot of money. Yada, yada... And we all know of his penchant for "non-smoking" products that make some power, but nothing to write home about. But he might just be onto something here. Some of his quotes are, "The 2007-year diesels have a new suite of emissions solutions that complicate the aftermarket enhancement of these powertrains. No longer will the 'smoke boys' be able to sell their gross poluting products. It's going to take some smarts to design products that do not violate these emissions systems yet improve performance. Of course the 'smoke boys' will try, and may even cheat. Only those with technical and engineering knowledge will survive. Old school hacking and overfueling was stupid in the past and idiotic in the future"...
If he's right about this, and I have a feeling he is as I don't think we can roll the coal and not screw up all these emission systems. We better hang onto our 5.9's like they are gold.... because they are...

Or, get a 6.7, take the emission crap off and move to a state that doesn't test

5.9s are indeed gold now. they will figure out away to modify these new systems it will just cost more money. I wonder how companies like MBRP and such who specialize in exhaust are going to handle it.

Exactly... it's gonna cost more. As far as removing all the egr stuff, being that it's tied into the computer, it's gonna be alot harder. Do-able, I'm sure, just MUCH more costly...

It doesn't matter how many sensors are in there, it's only electricity. Someone will figure out a way to tell the ECM what it wants to hear. I bet it won't take long either. Am I the only one picking up a bit of a condescending tone from Banks? That sure isn't the way I was taught to speak of the competition!

I have no doubt they'll make it fuel as much as they want... I also have no doubt the egr filters will get blocked quicker and worse, and then what do you do?

Is there a filter on the EGR system as well, or do you mean the DPF? Either way I'm sure they'll have to regenerate more often and will most likley have a proportionally shorter life (time will tell) but give the aftermarket some time to catch up and I bet there is all kinds of reasonably priced replacement alternatives.

Bank$ does make good products, they look pretty, fit nice, come in a fancy box, and make an OK amount of power. BUT, I am more than $1000 under what my buddy paid for his Bank$ Stinger Plus kit, I kill him on the dyno, out tow, out drag, out drive, have more adjustability, lower egt's, sounds better, goes faster, than his by a large margin. I'll keep my stuff, and leave Bank$ to the magazine advertisements.

And dont give me any negative points, that wasnt bashing, there were a few nice things said in there.

I was just thinking, no really I was. Anyways what I was gonna say, Banks is like K&N, a fantastic marketing machine, but anyone in the know won't touch them.

Now I agree to a point to what he said, but he's still kind of a arrogant jerk about it. It sounded to me like he was bashing the competition, which from what I can tell is the the one outperforming Banks, not "Banks outperforms 'em all" I don't see how everyone else is "cheating" .....so I guess that means that anyone who uses massive amounts of fuel and air with some black smoke as a byproduct must be doing it all wrong according to Mr Banks....I say power is power however you made it.
I agree with Dodgezilla's post. Very well said.

Well I see Gale being a very intelligent man that was one of the first guys way back in the day to start making some aftermarket power. He has tried a lot of things and will try a lot more. His products are very well engineered and work well. But for me like a lot of us I wanted more power than his stuff makes. But his stuff is very safe and reliable for the average guy who just wants a little more power for towing and some better fuel econ. And his comment about the smoke boys is actually true, if you think about it. That smoke is unburned fuel. From what I understand a diesel engine makes the most power at around 85% efficiency. So there will always be 15% of unburned fuel to make good power in a "perfect" fuel curve. But like some other guys on here I do need/want to learn more on how a diesel engine works. So I am not bashing nor promoting Banks, just stating his products are a little too "safe" for a lot of us power junkies.

I understand that point too on the smoke. But I want to see some of those pulling trucks run the dyno. I want to see what they would turn over with the excess fuel and without it. I've always been under the impression that you can make power without smoke to a certain extent, then iit's just going to get a to a point where you will have the smoke any way to get to the gigantic numbes. Let's see Banks take any of the 3 diesels and turn 1000+ on the rollers without some excess smoke.
