G56 shifting

I just recently bought a 06 with the G56 and i have to say im not impressed. I came from an 01 with the NV5600 and i have to say the NV shifted way better. The G56 is way more clunky and its way louder during shifts. It shifts fine and everything is normal but id expect out of a newer truck with less miles it would shift better than the ol 5600. Does this sound normal or do i have an rough shifting ride?

Very common with the 06's. Mine was like that since Day 1 as well. HOWEVER, I quickly switched to AMSOIL ATF and it smoothed out like a baby's bottom! I did this with my 06, I have an o7 now with a better G-56, but my 06 was just like yours until I put the AMSOIL in.,

I'd say something is not right. I went from a Ford F350 7.3 with the ZF 6 speed and the G56 is way smoother with shorter throws. The first time I drove the G56 I thought I was shifting a sports car compared to the Ford. I've driven a Dodge 5 speed (NV4500?) and it seemed clunky compared to the G56.

You might want to check and or change the trans fluid if it hasn't been done recently and also check out the condition of the clutch (either could effect the shifting)

Hope it is something simple, when they are working right they shift real nice......

X2 on the better shifting.......I can row my G56 with two fingers, not to mention some pretty quick and direct shifts. I haven't missed third in this truck where as I constantly hit fifth in my '02 w/ a 5600. Do try changing the fluid, and consider a clutch change ASAP if not already done. That DMF has got alot to do with the clunking I'm sure. Mine did before the Southbend went in.

JAMMA LAMMA they call me.....

I agree a fluid change is in the near future. Im not missing any gears and i dont think anything is wrong with the tranny but i kinda wish it shifted a tad bit better.

Overall I think mine shifts a little clunky as well. I'll probably try swapping the fluids to see if it helps...

Somethings not right. My 06 shifted like a car, smooth as silk. Even with the dual disc, it still shifts great. It is the best shifting truck transmission I have ever owned.

The G56 in my truck doesn't shift all that well either. 3rd almost always results in a really notchy shift.

I changed to Amsoil a few months ago in the hopes that it would improve the shift quality. As far as I can tell, the Amsoil did nothing for the shift quality. I was surprised because it seems like most claimed a marked improvement.

I for sure won't be spending the extra on Amsoil next time.

Wow I'm surprised. I LOVE my G56. I had a 2001 NV5600 and HATED IT. It's the reason my 2003 was an automatic. My G56 is a bit notchy going into 3rd and 5th, but I think it shifts great!

Right now it has Redline ATF in it... couldn't get a hold of Amsoil at the time.

There are points where i wish i had the ole NV back. On the Amsoil note, i changed out the fluid in the NV for some Amsoil and it also did nothing for shift quality. So i think im going to use Redline.

Wow this is news to me. Mr G56 shifts almost as good as my Beetle TDI. I have Amsoil in it now but even before the Amsoil it still shifted fine. All the trucks and cars I've ever owned were manuals so I have lots of experience shifting. The G56 on my truck is hard to beat. Very positive and smooth shifting. The only complain I have is reverse. It takes a little pressure to overcome that pressure. One time I almost cream this Prius in front of me at Home Depot when I thought I had it in R but it was realy on 2nd> Other than that the G56 is an Awesome tranny.

And now that I think about it, with the stock clutch, my truck shifted better. Switching to the SBC DD, I've definately got to work more, and get all sorts or little quirks, hard to get into first or second sometimes, feel a pop in 5th sometimes, etc. So my experiences have been with the SBC DD...

Two finger shifts here also...couldn't ask for a smoother system. BTW I still have the original fluid.
