Unhappy Funny sounds...

So today I'm backing my dump trailer (8k lbs) up a steep driveway, having to give it some gas, a bad sounding slipping almost grinding sound came from the tranny (auto w/OD). When the sound was going it was as if the torque to the tires stopped until I let off the pedal (the truck rolled foreward slightly) allowing the engine to idle down.

Is this the beginning of the end of my tranny? Or just something slipping.
I've got 217k on it, I bought it at 215k so I don't know if its been replaced/re-built. I havent had any problems, having pullled much more weight than this time.

I did just have my fluid/filter changed a few days ago. The mechanic said there was no bands to adjust, though I'm not sure what bands do exactly.

Any thoughts??

It's possible the low/reverse band is loose.

Well looking at the service records from new until 200k the tranny has never been replaced/rebuilt. I'm looking at the Viper from transmissioncenter.com
I am planning on pulling 10k plus any body familiar with this tranny? Might there be a better alternative?
Not having a lot of experience with that sort of thing, how hard would it be to replace the tranny myself?

One more question, how do I tell which tranny I have 500 / 518 / 618 / 46RE / 47RE ????? I couldn't see any id tag.

Im planning on doing a rebuild myself with a shift kit and a Goerend conv. I would imagine that pulling the tranny myself, the conv, shift kit and rebuild kit, im looking at around a grand. Possibly a bit more once I buy all the dex to fill it and I want to upgrade to a deep aluminum pan. PATC has some nice stuff but I think its a bit overpriced.. JMO.. As far as which tranny you have, you have a A518 aka 46RH.

Yes, unless it's been switched by a PO.
