Fuel Tank Strap

Well, just spent all day repairing and reinstalling the fuel tank front strap. Broke where the strap bolts to the frame near the drive shaft. It had been broken before and someone had welded a piece in there. Looked like stress fracture on both breaks. No rust or anything like that. Called a dealer who told me there were no new ones west of the Mississippi, so jury-rigged this one. Has anyone else had one of these go bad? Seems like such a stupid thing to go wrong and a save-every-cent-we-can kind of attaching system. If you have fould a better way of attaching a strap, let me know

Wayne:

Gunracer1 had this happen to his 97 about a month ago. He is on vacation this week so you may want to send him a PM regarding how he fixed his. He will be back on 3/22.

I just can't imagine a 35 gal. fuel tank bouncing down the road under my truck. Of all the things that should be "bullet-proof" on our cars/trucks, that should be #1. Guess we'll have to consider changing them on a regular basis like brakes and stuff. There were no TSBs or recalls on the straps either, that I could find. Gonna order a front and rear and carry them like a spare tire. Still shaking my head.
