Fuel Tank Mod !!

Was looking at the pickup/sender unit in my 1994 Ram2500 and had a thought. I know, some time's that can be a dangerouse situation

Is there just a top plate that will fit the opening in the top of the fuel tank? I would like to
setup my own pick up and sending unit. Here's the plan;

Drill Four holes. Two - one for pick up and other for fuel return. I will install a check valve to
prevent siphoning back to the tank. The other for fuel return. And one small one for the sender wires.

One bigger hole in the middle for a fuel level sending unit out of a semi truck tank. I drive a tanker and the sender was not working. I pulled It out to find out that these unit's are constructed in an aluminun tube that has a float that travels up inside the tube. These
are very strong and won't crap out like the stock units. When I find out what the ohm's are for stock I will be able to calibrate to the truck's fuel gauge.

If I still had some of my machining equipment I could make everything I would need. If I can't find a plate I might cut down the stock unit. It's bad and not working.

Sounds like a sweet idea to me. I'd be making the plate, surely you can find someone with the right tools... Nothing like making a truck "your own".

Where the heck was that article when I replaced mine last month??!! I'll not be putting in an OEM one again when this one fails.

9812vram-My thought's exactly. I read the artical also. Simular to was I want to do. Just Junk the OEM unit and make one that's simple and will last. I'm taking measurments and collecting the part's. Will do a write up when finshed.

sry bout that guess one of us shud put that in the How To thread at the top of the forum. that thread is how i found this forum. i had fuel sender issues and the search engine i was using lead me here. so i joined. my problem turned out to be the contacts in the unit had lost thier tension. so after re tensioning them i was good to go. when the unit fails again i will replace w centroid unit. keep in mind that thread came out of the 24 valve forum and im pretty sure ohm reading for gauges are different.
