Fuel Tank Gauge ?

Fuel Tank Gauge ?
Yesterday while driveing the fuel alarm came on. I looked at the guage and it was reading on the lower peg. I knew there was fuel since I had only driven 100 miles since fill up. Does this sound like the sender is bad in the tank? If so how hard is it to change?
Thanks,
Randy

Sounds like the sender is bad as you said. I had mine replaced in a shop to the tune of a $200, I think. Next time I'll do it myself with the info from this board. You can either drop the fuel tank or the preferred method is to tilt the bed. I think the part is only about $50.

I believe the Fuel Sending Unit is Mopar part number 04897670AB about $40-$45 at the dealer. Replaced mine about 4 months ago. You will need a strap wrench to get the large (about 6" in diameter) plastic nut that holds the assembly in the tank off so that you can remove the entire fuel pick up assembly. The sending unit mounts to the fuel pick up assembly with a couple of screws.

I tilted my bed, it was alot faster for me to lift the bed then to drop the tank. I use a sender off of a 96' gas powered half ton from a friends salvage yard for free, they are the exact same thing.

On mine, the sender died and I was too lazy to change it - just set the trip meter and filled tank after 500 miles or so. This was ok for a while but I don't like being so lazy.
Finally did drop the tank - syphoned fuel into cans - and replaced the sender. Sender was not expensive, dropping the tank was a pain (tilting the bed sounds a *lot* smarter!), and the new sended has lasted for years without going bad.
Best of luck.
