fuel system with gas fuel pump?

Has anyone ever tried to build a fuel system with a high output gas/alcohol pump? I ask as most of the aftermarket lift pumps are fairly pricey (FASS 150GPH @ $426), where a Aeromotive S/S (150 GPH @ 18-20psi) is around $150. I've used aeromotive before on race cars, and their tech guys say running diesel won't hurt the pump, you'll get less usage hours out of it (1500 instead of 2000), but that is still a rather long life. There is the obvious problem of you couldn't run "homemade" biodiesel, or I would at least think not. But other than that, no big deal. Am I missing something here, or is it more of the everything on a diesel is more expensive problem?

BTW, I haven't done this, but with the soon-to-be addition of an ottomind, I've started thinking more and more about fuel issues. BTW, the Aeromotive pump above is rebuildable with a simple kit (don't know about the various diesel pumps).

it should work, as long as the pressure isn't more than 20 psi... i have been using a 12 volt gas pump to transfer diesel from my auxillary tank for 7 years, and it still works good

follow-up

I said I was only thinking about doing this, but it may be getting very realistic. My other post has info about my gauge install and pressure readings:

I can easily take care of the pressure with a bypass regulator (the ones that try to regulate with orifice size are a joke and don't work). JohnH, is yours an in-tank, or if its exposed, did you do anything weather-wise to protect it.

My major concern would be mounting it on a frame rail (in a box of course), but on occasion I find myself frame deep in mud (see pics if you want). I'm sure the racing pumps aren't meant for that.
