Fuel Solenoid
So I started putting in my new 4KGSK today, finally, and while removing the solenoid, I noticed that it was in fairly bad shape. The "cloth" boot that covers the spring and "plunger" is all tatterd and not really protecting anything anymore.
So my questions:
What does this solenoid actually do? Is the "boot" necessary? Is it worth replacing? If it is worth replacing, is there a "better" solenoid/device that I should be replacing it with?

I used some rubber from an new big truck tire tube I had cut up for another project. Wrapped it twice around the solenoid and ty-wrapped it. Seems to work great, and for 27 bucks for the real thing, I'll do this every 6 months instead (got enough tube rubber to last about 10 yrs at that rate).
