Fuel shutoff won't disengage when starting..

Just bought a 97 dually to replace the 96 that got wrecked (from a board member). This one runs fine but the solenoid for the fuel shutoff won't open when the ignition is turned on. I have to manually move the plunger up. Gets old fast...

Replaced the solenoid and mount from a running truck, Nothing different. Replaced the relays on the firewall below the hood gasket. Nothing different. So what should I check next? What voltage should be at the solenoid when the ignition is on?

Thanks!!

Dave

The wire that runs from the battery has a fusible link if blown no power.

Cool. I'll check that tomorrow. Just a continuity check should do it, right?

I just found fostertruck.com and see that he has fusible links. I assume this is the best place to get 'em?

Thanks!!

Here is a schematic that may help. The fuselink power wire is what pulls the solenoid to the on position. Voltage is battery voltage.

I have read that it is a blue wire. I don't think a continuity check will do it, it corrodes and the problem is it won't carry "enough" power.

I don't know about the 97, but on the 98s Dodge started using a fuse on the fuse panel on the drivers-side of instrument panel instead of the fuseable link from the battery.

The solenoid only pulls up when the starter is engaged. Pull the relay out, and use a multimeter or a test light from the brown signal wire to the ground and check the voltage when cranking. If its low or not there at all, then you may have a corroded or broken wire.
