I am wondering what progrmer or chip to use if I only want to get better response from tranny/ eng and only less than 40 hp gain. I want better fuel milage without sacrificing my truck.

They all work about the same. Most people here (myself included) use the Smarty Sr or Jr. Use the economy setting, and defuel a little bit.

After that, general state of repair, proper tire pressure, and concervative driving habits will net you the best bang for the buck.

I just bought the Quadzilla max mileage programmer (from the DTR Store, it's on sale). Although I have put less than 2000 miles on it, I saw at least a 5% (real world, hand calc) gain. From 22.4 (750 miles) to ~23.5. (750 miles, but these miles included many more hills/mountains).
I've heard from a bunch of people now that the Smarty Jr is better, but no one had any numbers to back it up. It could be better, but the quadzilla max mileage had a much better price.

I like my Smarty Jr.

If you go with one of the mileage boxes be sure to upgrade your fuel filtering, those are pressure boxes.

I went with PPE Excellerator. TOW setting. Gain is higher than 40hp but I have had it for 75000 miles with no reliability issues.

What else are you guys doing to save MPG? On gassers bigger intakes help, less restrictive exhausts help, stronger plugs and wires help... What for the diesels helps? Beside tuners and programers? I don't want to run a programmer.

I've found that actual timing - from software - increases fuel economy more than higher rail pressure (effective timing).

If you want to see gains in power or economy, you'll have to use a programmer. Nothing else has been shown to provide real gains on a stock truck.
