Fuel Pressure Gage

I have my 1999 24 valve in the shop getting an injector pump, a lift pump and a filter. I know VERY little about these vehicles although I have had it since new and one injector pump was put on it by Dodge just 23000 miles ago. It now has 103000 miles and I got smoke and a loss of power again. My question for you experts: Should I have them put a fuel pressure gage on it so that I might know when trouble is coming with an injector pump again? I can't afford failures like this but neither will I sell it so someone else has them. Thanks in advance for any and all advice. Dodge wanted $3400.00 for this job but a diesel shop is doing it for about half of that. Sonny

Most definitely....a FP guage is the best money that you can spend on a 24V CTD. The FP guage lets you know that the lift pump is working and the injector pump has enough fuel supply to keep it cool.

Fuel Pressure Gage

Just a question I forgot to ask. What is the best fuel pressure gage to get? Is there manual ones where diesel fuel goes in a line in to the cab so I get to smell it if the line should rupture and/or is there such a thing as a digital one?

Please advise.

Well, there is lots of debate as to what is the better setup. There is also lots of reading if you care to read it (this is just an example):

Personally, I like the ISSPRO guages (0-30 psi) for a 24V. Run diesel straight to the guage in the cab, use a grease gun hose, and a needle valve to dampen the pulses from the lift pump and injector pump. This is likely the most reliable pressure reading. You CAN use an isolator with a mechanical guage, but a lot of people have had the isloators fail.

There are also a lot of electric guages on the market. While they keep you from having to run diesel into the cab BUT the electric senders can be troublesome (which I am sure many members here will both agree AND disagree). JMO.

Yes you can get a digital readout if that turns your crank. For digital guages, check out : http://www.spa-uk.co.uk/design/dualg...achometers.htm Or
