Fuel mileage report on non-stock truck.

I went to TN over the 4th weekend and decided to check my fuel mileage since making some changes in my setup.

I filled up in Wytheville, VA and reset my trip. On the return trip I refueled at the same Flying J and figured mileage. I knew it was going to be good because of where my needle was compared to mileage driven. I drove 510 miles and filled up with 24.3 gallons for 21.25 mpg.

I know it's nothing earth shattering with regards to fuel mileage but I haven't seen that kind of mileage in years.

Very nice, Mike! I've never seen over 20 mpg w/ my auto.
What changes caused the increase?

RJ,

I used to think the decrease in mileage was related to going bigger and bigger on injectors. When my truck was stock I would get similar mileage figures but as I add performance items the mileage suffered some. The mileage drop caused me to change my driving habits in an effort to achieve better mileage but helped little. I checked my mileage from time to time but never saw a real difference.

After making the change I started to notice I was going further on the tank of fuel but I thought it was a fluke. After a couple more tanks showed the same thing I figured I would make an effort to check mileage in a way that I was confident in doing. I used the same pump, letting it shut off on it's own and not adding any extra fuel after the pump clicked off or by adding any additives to skew the numbers.

I don't want to say 100% what I think it might be because it will be most likely be taken the wrong way. I will say I think it was the removal of something that I used to run.

You don't have to worry about it because you run the almighty 12 valve.

I've been doing pretty good. Give me a buzz sometime and I'll tell you what I think it was.

It would be interesting to see what you think it was even though i have a 12v too. Honestly I dont think it should be a problem to discuss what mods help and hurt things.

I can get 22mpg on the interstate with mine as long as i keep my foot out of it. I got 20mpg last summer driving back and forth to work when i was working where my dad works. He said my truck wouldnt get 20mpg like his does, and i told him if i drove it like he drives his that it would. He couldnt really believe it when it got 20mpg. haha

I know with my 12 valve, driving style plays a bigger role than anything i have done so far.

I was surprised that i could still hit the 20 mpg mark after the mach 4's, box set to timing, tires aired up and speed down, does wonders

Anyone that knows me, knows I don't have a problem saying what I think. With respect to DTR and their rules, my statement of a product hurting fuel mileage would fall into a grey area. Even though the intent is not to bash, it could be taken that way.

I could be totally wrong about my suspicions. So in fairness to everyone I'll just keep product names out of the conversation.

Edit: My advice to anyone that cares to listen. If you've noticed that mileage has dropped there is a logical way to determine what could be causing the problem. Taking items away from the setup you normally run may just be one way to approach the problem.

So what was this products intended purpose? Was it a box? Was is a set of spinners? Camper shell?

The intended purpose of the product was to add performance to the 24 valve ISB engine.

Good report Sir and you are doing the right thing in the way you handled your thread and post! I agree 100% with your reasoning. But, I was glad to hear you got that great improved mileage!

So Mike man, I obviously wont be able to get it outa ya if no one else could..
But, what kind of mileage would you get before on a trip like that? How much better mileage did you end up gettin if ya dont mind me askin?
