Fuel mileage, AGAIN!

Alright guys! I ran across another very happy FORD owner, yesterday. He has an '03 Powerstroke, and he claimed to get around 22 MPG, ??? towing or not. Is he blowing smoke, or what? Mine got 23 ONCE, going mostly downhill, and 55MPH. I get around 12 MPG towing 6000lbs. Non towing mileage varies between 18 and 15 MPG.Is my mileage, normal, or do I have a problem? :- ??? I have 23,000, and have not had any problems, at all. I want more mileage, maybe you guys could help me out. I want this truck to stay under warranty, so major mods are out. Is my truck normal? Please help. :-

Re:Fuel mileage, AGAIN!

Of course you understand that gear ratios play a big differance even with same makes, also stock tire sizes vs non ,off road vs long haul tread ,time of year [read fuel mixes and air temps] plus road grades oh and lets not forget human error in the math department

Re:Fuel mileage, AGAIN!

I realize that the 355's are probably causing me to get worse mileage, while towing. I was considering getting a low range splitter for the heavy uphill towing, to save my auto tranny. I have a really steep driveway, too.

Re:Fuel mileage, AGAIN!

I doubt that the 3:55s are costing you anything with that weight of trailer. I don't think that your mileages are too bad for the number of miles on the truck. It should get better.

The real mileage factor is often the right foot, time spent idling, etc.

Re:Fuel mileage, AGAIN!

My vote is that he is blowing smoke concerning the towing mileage. That is, unless he is towing virtually no weight and whatever he is towing has zero wind resistance.

Re:Fuel mileage, AGAIN!

It may be possible he got 22 once running empty.
But he would have to have one H*^*LL of a truck
to get 22 towing. I don't believe it.

Re:Fuel mileage, AGAIN!

Once your out of warranty, the best mileage you'll ever see will come with an edge ez or tst pm3 on its lowest setting, and some rv275 or EDM mach 1 injectors..nice little boost of power and you'll pick up 2 mpg..For whatever reason, thats the combo that these engines are most efficient with..I ran rv275's and averaged 21 mpg consistently, driving conservatively. Once I went to bigger injectors, it dropped back down to 17-18 mpg. Thats about the only way you're going to increase your mpg..That, or slow down.

Re:Fuel mileage, AGAIN!

The only diesel that will get 22pmg towing is a Volkwagen TDI-- and it's gonna be a REALLY small trailer!

They guy is full of it.

Run some small EDM injectors and a box on the mild setting. That's the best mpg setup. That, and run small hwy tires, drive slow, and never bury the pedal.

By the way, these are all things that very few CTD owners do

Re:Fuel mileage, AGAIN!

I guess I would have to have it explained to me as to how you can put weight behind this ferd and not get any worse milage than when it is empty. maybe he has found a way to buck math and physics. Ther is a heck of a career for this guy down at the ferd factory all he has to do is explain this little secret to the engineers so thy can put it in more stuff and gain market share. Maybe though you mis-understood are you sure he didn't say 22 mpg driving or being towed.

Re:Fuel mileage, AGAIN!

Yeah, the guy said it was a 30' trailer. How do you dirve withour burying the pedal Just kiddin, though, I am pretty easy on the truck. The only time I really get into it, is when I'm going uphill, towing.

Empty @ 2000 RPM, 70 MPH I get 18.4, at 1800 RPM, 64 MPH I get 20.4 MPH. This is a 01, 2500 4x4 extended cab w/ 3.55s and 2300 miles

Re:Fuel mileage, AGAIN!

I've got the same truck set up as Armyguy and my #'s are similar though I found it hard to drive 65 mph one day just to see what kind of mileage it would get.
