Fuel inlet filter

I am replacing the fuel sending unit in my fuel tank and noticed the fuel screen (inlet filter) was very dirty.
I started removing it and tore the inner screen.
How critical is this screen? I have a FASS 150 pump with filter so not sure if I can get away with just using the outer screen and pick up.
Anyone have a part number for a replacement screen?
I was planning on putting everything back together today but may have to wait till I get a replacement screen
Any help would be great
Thanks, Ken

I haave read past reports of fuel tanks full of dirt and other junk that supposedly got in thru the top hole where the sender and draw tubes mount, due to a poorly fitted gasket.

I do not think the larger draw straw type pick up tubes have a filter on them.

I'd wait for a few more responses on this one though.

I just had the sending unit out of the tank a few weeks ago to install the new larger pick up tube from fass. The screen was dirty there too. I ordered a new sending unit from wholesalemopar.com but they could not get it here in time (before Irene hit us). I used the old one and put it back. The new FASS pick up tube has no filter or screen at all. It is just a 5/8 tube that sticks down in the tank.

The bottom half of the sending unit is floating (on the upper half) and if not set right will through the fuel gauge off. The screen you are talking about controls the height of the lower half of the unit. Make sure you get it back in right. With the new FASS pick up tube, almost everything on the original sending unit was abandoned except for the fuel gauge. The return from the FASS goes back into the new adapter that gets fastened to the top of the tank. Had to drill a 1 1/2 inch hole in top of the tank.

Bottom line is I would not worry about the screen especially since you have the FASS. Make sure the little plastic frame around the screen goes back on though.

I just reinstalled the structure with the upper screen removed.
I also removed the spring and 1 way valve. It just fell out and wasn't sure which way it was meant to go in so I left it out.
I will probably go with Draw Straw if I pull the bed again.

On another note, it is nice having a working fuel gauge. Hasn't worked in the last 4 years.
