Fuel Injectors: DonM/F1 Rebuild vs. New Stockers

Well, add me to the dreaded 2003 injector failure group. Truck has begun having the cold starting issues when it sits overnight and gets cold (<45 degrees F). Took the truck in to get diagnosed and as expected it has excessive return flow. An injector shutdown test was not performed, so I don't know exactly which ones or how many were down. The service manager recommended replacing all of them with new Boschs. I have been researching my injector options for a while and it appears the most popular option is to send them in to F1 to be retipped and rebuilt. My only reservation about this is based on the service managers opinion and what I have read in other threads. It sounds as though the 2003s and 2004s used an inferior injector with a softer metal in the ball and ball seat and is the main reason these injectors are having leak issues. Supposedly the new replacement boschs are better. I was told that repairing the ball seat on the ones I have (ie, via F1/DonM), will be great and get me going again, but I will still have an inferior injector that will likely have the same issues again eventually. Of course I have gotten 180,000 miles out of these, so they really weren't that bad. So as it turns out the price is about the same to buy new boschs, or send them in to Don to get rebuilt (assuming that all of them need to be rebuilt) and get Flux nozzles. Actually it is even a little cheaper to go to DonM, so that money could be spent adding better filtration. Anybody else out there have any input? Was hoping maybe DonM would chime in. Ideally the best thing would be to buy new bosch's and then put Flux nozzles on them, but that would be prohibitively expensive and out of the question. Thanks guys

I had mine rebuilt. Rebuild should be cheaper than new injectors. If they selling new for the price of the rebuild they are probably not the new ones and are rebuilds that chrysler is selling and they are junk IMHO. IF your having one rebuilt do all 6.

First, you have to go through one of Don's dealers. Go to his website and pick one and go from there.

Second is is cheaper and better to let Don have at them.

Third, the svc mgr was correct about 03-04 tips being inferior. Don will make you new tips from blank stock that will be even superior to 04.5 and up tips. The injector bodies are the same.

Right now it is going to depend on whats wrong with them. We are currently out of stock on "some" of the parts that "could" be wrong with your inejctors.

If the parts we dont have are not the issue with your injectors, right NOW is the time to get them done. This is because we have a massive back log of injectors that are waiting on the out of stock parts to arrive and once they do, we wont be able to get to any new work for 2-3 weeks.

If you roll the dice and the repairs dont involve the parts we are out of, you could have your injectors back fast, but if it goes the other way, it could be a couple of weeks while you wait on us to get them. A nightmare scenerio for some people Im sure. Certainly if you have to have your truck all the time for work, etc.

Im sorry for this mess, but we have been squeezing on the parts suppliers like crazy. The goal is to have ALL the needed parts by next week.

For the folks who can wait or can have their trucks down a few weeks, this program saves the end user lots of money over new injectors.

Ya no questions on the quality of work, as F1 is outstanding. However, one thing this is usually misunderstood is that the cost to hone and rebuild your injectors does not include new injectors. Don's and everyone elses price includes tips and tip work. If you have a bad injector, Don won't work on it, and/or guarantee it since it was defective in the first place. Totally understandable, but most people (including myself) are/were unaware that if your stock injectors are beyond repair, that YOU are responsible for replacing it before he does the work. I barely lucked out as one of mine was close to being toast, but he was able to make it work.

Surely I am misunderstanding you here. Isn't the point of rebuilding them to fix the bad ones? It was my understanding that if they are repairable (ie, bad ball seat, o-rings, solenoids, etc) by Don, he will repair them for an extra fee, but if they aren't repairable then you have to buy a new body. Are new bodies available to be purchased, or will I be responsible for providing one (or more) if they are damaged beyond repair.

The next question I have is in regards to sizing. My only mods are a smarty, the goerend trans, the intake, raptor lift pump, and the intake and exhaust. I removed the quadzilla pressure box from the setup about 6 months ago. Don't plan on upgrading CP3 unless it craps out. I pull about 10,000 pounds probably 10 to 20% of my driving time, the rest of the time is commuting time or highway driving. From what I have read, I want to stay below the 2 series with a stock CP3. I definitely want increased performance, but more importantly I want reliable and good running. A little smoke doesn't bother me. I was thinking something like the flux 1.6s or 1.8s??

Thanks guys

I know every truck has it's issues and I'm in no way shape or form bashing anyone but I now have almost 268,000 miles on my stock injectors and with the stock fuel system the filter was changed every 3,000 miles....with the AirDog every 15,000 miles....I'm just a firm believer in P.M.

As for the Don M uprgrades....thats my first choice when the time comes...have heard nothing but great things about his work...and he's only about 150 miles from where I live .
