When I replaced mine( stole one out of a wrecked 97 gas powered truck, yes the little float and sender are the exact same in gas and diesel ) it was doing the same thing, I just gave the top of the assembly a few good taps " the redneck way of fixing things" and it started working just fine

Sure sounds like that is what is happening. The sending unit that mounts to the pick up tube in the tank is about a $35 - $40 part from the Dealer. Get a new pick up tube gasket at the same time (it's about 6" in diameter). Best method to replace is is to loosen the bed bolts on the passengers side, remove the bolts on the drivers side and tilt the bed after disconnecting the wiring harness and ground strap. After disconnecting the fuel lines and electrical connector at the tank, use a strap wrench to loosen the lock ring that holds the fuel pick up tube in the tank. When removing the pick up tube from the tank have a bucket handy to drain the fuel into as the tube probably holds at least a quart. If you have good coordination you may be able to empty the pick up tube back into the tank. Replace the fuel sending unit on the fuel pick up tube. When replacing the pick up tube use the strap wrench to get her good and tight or it may leak when full.

My gauge hasnt worked for a year it worked ok when i bought the truck then just got worse. I , After a year of not working fixed it. Read this article http://dodgeram.org/tech/repair/fuel_sender/sender.htm

And it was sunday so i had no way to get parts, but I just understood why it went bad and used my imagination to come up with my own version fix. Before you actually bought a new one i would take your old one out and hook it up and see if you can get it to work.

Mine was losse like it said in the article and just wasn't making good conatct now it works like a charm.

I put in a new sender and it did nothing. Still the same thing happening. Today it is in the shop to track down the problem. Hopefully it is just a ground wire somewhere. I put a 5 hr limit on them because $45 an hr gets expensive. I might just have to live with it if they can't find it.

Sounds like sender to me too... I had to replace mine at 190k. I must admit I would always forget to reset trip odometer and would have to "use the force" to decide when to stop for fuel. It was a great bonding experience for me and my baby.

Went and picked it up and he said that the PCM is the culprit. I have seen performance PCM's advertised - could that replace the original or they designed to attach to the orginal? I am going to call Dodge tomorrow and see what a new will run me.
