My truck will go to about 3/4 when I fill it up, after about a 100 miles the gauge goes to empty and the fuel light comes on. The sending unit has been replaced. I talked with a person at advance auto electronics and he thinks it something in the truck not the gauge. Any suggestions? Tracin the wires this weekend.

Not sure if this check will work on 1st Generation Dodges (It works on 2nd Generation Dodges) but hold down the odometer button while turning the key to the on setting (prior to starting). This step checks all of the gauges in the instrument cluster including the fuel gauge.

You will see activity first in the odometer window.

When I did my instrument cluster check a couple months ago my fuel gauge went to empty, then 1/8 then 1/4 then full and then sets itself to the current fuel level.

Didnt work. Must only work on 2nd gen 24vs.

The 12v trucks have mechanical odometer- 24V are electronic clusters so it will have no effect on the older trucks.
There are threads here about testing the gage itself- I would search and try that.

would not be the first time a new part was bad .
its a lot of work but you could pull the sending unit and hook up the wires out of the tank and move the float and see if its working the gauge right also test the track on the float with an ohms meter to see if it has a dead spot on it.

Jumped the wires at the tank and still no work. Is there a way to test the gauge itself out of the cluster? I have searched and came up empty. I m going to look through the service manual again but any input would be great.

Found differetn ways to test the wiring in the service manual but nothing to test the gauge itself. New one from dodge is $215 for the gauge itself

Generally, you ground the wire that goes to the sending unit. Gauge should max. Sending unit can be pulled & float arm moved. Resistance should changs smoothly when the float is moved. I bought a sending unit from Centroid products. I forgot what specs but give them a call & see if they know. They have made a few for Rams.

Sending unit is new. Did the testing at the plug and tank and nothin. Found out how to test wiring but nothin in the service manual that tells me how to test the gauge itself.

if it works when the tank is full then its the sending unit that is what changes the voltage back to the gauge I just had the same thing on a 97 and the new from dodge ($48) float Assembly. fixed it.
