fuel gauge sending unit

fuel gauge sending unit
truck in my sig,
went out today and tunned the key on and the gauge reads E with the light on, so i droped the tank and took out the sending unit, and tryed it with an ohms meter and just reads wide open.....
does this mean iam gonna have to replace it? and can i just buy the little PC board? or do i have to get a whole new unit?
this unit screws sits in the tank and theres a big plastic nut that screws on...
will any other year work with this one? my buddys 05 has like a locking ring on it.. is that one the same?
