Fuel gauge sending unit

Does anyone know the part number for the sending unit on a 97 ram2500? The dealer is only trying to sell me the whole assembly

Do a search on this one. There are lots of threads and the P/N is listed there. I did mine last year and the sending unit was $60 at the local dealer.

You might want to consider replacing your hard fuel lines with diesel rated flex lines while oyu have it apart. Also, check the metal break line that runs behind the tank, they rust pretty bad and are usually in bad shape. I dropped the tank on mine and all in all, wasnt a bad job. You will need a big strap wrench to get the lock ring off the tank. Watch the electrical connection on top of the tank, it has locking clip that has to be removed before you can separate it. Again, there are lots of threads on this site for this job, look them over. They will give oyu all the info you need.

Good luck

Try removing the bed bolts on the left side, and loosening them on the right side. Disconnect the fill hose. Then lift the bed up. I did it that way, and I think that is the easier way than trying to juggle a tank with several gallons of fuel still in it.

Would this most likely be what's wrong with my '99? The last couple of days, my fuel gauge just works sometimes, going all the way to Empty when it quits. It had never done that before.

Sender failure is very common.
