I have a 01 ram 2500 diesel. My problem is the fuel gauge doesn't pass 1/4 tank. I have used the cluster check by holding down the odo reset button all the other gauges go from 0 to 1/4 to 1/2 then to full but the fuel gauge goes from 0 to 1/8 to 1/4 to full and it never changes from 1/4 even if I top it off or run it dry. Has anyone ever run into this problem or know a way to fix it that would be of great help.

My fuel gauge went bad in my '97. I had to drop the tank and replace the sending unit in the tank. Wasn't expensive and not hard to do if the tank is empty.

Run the tank low. Put a longer hose on the filter drain and use the lift pump to pump the tank dry.

What papaduck said. The float attached to the sending unit may not be making it's way all the way to the top of the fluid level. You put the full level of fuel in the tank but the rheostat is mis-interpreting the amount. Bent (in the down position) float rod or broken and soggy float maybe. Doesn't take much bending to put the sending unit out of calibration. Do you fuel up at high-flow commercial diesel pumps by chance?

Some times, but I think its jacked cause I fill it way to much. But when I inplugged the sensor then plugged it back in the gauge jumped to 1/2 tank then almost instantly started dropping till it hit 1/8 tank

Does anyone know how often a gauge cluster or just gauge itself go bad. I seem to read a lot about sending units but nothing about these new electronic gauges

only heard of a cluster going bad once- 99% of the time it's the sending unit.
Search the forum for other postings about this- they can be rebuilt/modified instead of replacing every couple of years and for a lot less.

I lost a lift and injection pump and continued to have problems after replacement until I figured out my tank sending unit had failed, never going lower than 1/4 tank. This seems to be a popular level with failed sending units for some reason.

If you figure out that it is your sending unit and not the gage, I suggest tilting the bed of the truck instead of trying to remove the tank.
Some say it is ok to pull the tank, but with my truck, it would have been easier to lift the bed with my engine hoist and work from the top.

disconnect sending unit wire, use jumper wire directly to ground from harness.
if gauge goes to full.......it is sender
if gauge does not go to full..... it is gauge or other problem.

Tilting the bed is the only way to go especially if you live in the salt belt.
Many times the tank straps only bend once before they break.
Plus you don't have to run the tank level down, which can be difficult if the gauge doesn't work.
