Fuel Gauge is off big time... 03 CTD

Do all QC 2500 regular bed (6') have a 34 gallon tank?

My guague read E today, as in laying on the peg. My overhead computer said 0 and I was in a panic in a major way. I got to the gas station and fuel'd up an only got 27.5 gallons of diesel in the thing. That was squeezing it in there too.

That is 8.5 gallons off! I have always thought the gauge has dropped way to fast. Come to think of it, the most I have ever put in it is around 28 gallons but I usually fill up at the 1/8 to a 1/4 mark.

Thanks,

Eric

Dunno bout the 3rd gens but my 2nd gen falls off fast on the last quarter and I ran into the negative miles to go a few times...never ever did fill it to what the book says. Always had a few gallons.

My next truck, that will be BLACK ;D will be a long box but I will be watching the gauge on it too.

on the 2nd gens, the overhead goes to zero miles DTE when there are 6 gallons left.

On the 3rd Gens there should be about 3.5 gallons left in the tank when the needle is on the E. This has consistently been the case on my truck....as I try to wait and fill up when it hits the E and I usually get right around 30 gallons in it (filling it ALL the way up 'til it won't hold any more).

Running out of fuel in a diesel is a BAD thing.
With fuel stations that carry diesel not always on the corner, I think it's Dodge's way of giving us a little "Insurance Policy".

That could be skewed if you are running a fueling box with injectors.
With my TST Powermax 3 comp I was showing 34 MPG
LOL I have been down to 2 gallons on a fill up and it showed

-11 miles to empty.

I was in pucker mode as I had the 5th wheel on and the station I planned to fill up at was closed.

I dunno - I hear the BLACK trucks have TWICE as many assorted problems than the other colors... ;D ;D

And none of you guys checked my math? 34 - 27.5 is 6.5 gallons. ooopppss..

It is nice of them to give me the insurance but man, 6.5 gallons on the peg is a little excessive.

Thanks for the responses, I will defintely be keeping a closer eye on this and reporting back.

Re:Fuel Gauge is off big time... 03 CTD

According to the owners manual (I just got my truck a week ago so I've been reading it!! LOL!!)
When the fuel guage hits empty ( computer says 0 miles DTE) you have 10% fuel capacity remaining (in reserve) thats 3.4 gallons in the short beds 34 gallon tank & 3.5 gallons in the long beds 35 gallon tank.

I filled up today with 10 miles left on DTE & put in 28 gallons, so it's bigger than 10% but that's not such a bad thing!!

Mine's the same way. I let it go down to empty, read 0 miles on DTE, and still had 7 gallons in reserve. I can live with that.
