fuel gauge flickering / not working

ok gang tried using the search feature all morning with no luck, so here I am.
fuel gauge is not working on my 95 ext cab 12v. tank was taken out of the donor truck & put in this one, & same prob's. I can't tell how much fuel I have...... its stranded me a few times too. It used to come & go, but now its just nothing at all. Is it in the sending unit, or the float lever inside the tank?? I only wanna drop the tank once as the weather is getting cold-thanks!

these are notorious for the problem. Most are the sending unit wearing on it's shaft and it lets the contact arm move away from the winding . I have taken several of these apart and tightened the thing on the shaft and fixed the problem. But who knows how long. A new sending unit is available also. Don't let the ******* tell you you have to replace the whole unit. But that is where your problem is. Sometimes the float will be falling apart also, but it usually isn't intermittent.

I've read the sending units on the gassers aren't resistant to diesel fuel.

ahhh yes....had the same problem on my truck....ordered the sender (with float) for $130 can. good thing too cause when i took it apart the float was pretty much gone. also replaced the pre filter while i was in there. i took the box off instead of dropping the tank.....found it was really simple and only 1.5 hr job. but i was in a shop and had a hoist to take the box off as well.

I never remove the bed totally.
Just loosen the passenger side bolts, remove the diver's side then tilt it up.
Only need to lift it a couple of feet for plenty of clearance.
