fuel filters

I went by the local Cummins today & bought my Fleetguard (LF16035) oil filters ($13.49 ea). I asked about the Fleetguard fuel filters. The parts guy said they had the Fleetguard fuel filters. But, at 80% ?? they filtered 10 microns. He said that Cummins now owns fleetguard & that, the Fleetguard 10 micron fuel filter is within Cummins specs. ( $15.49 ea). I already bought the baldwin fuel filters at Granger ($13.49 ea) I thought I read here (somewhere) that Baldwin fuel filters were 5 micron rated.. Are the Baldwin fuel filters better than the Fleetguard (Cummins) filters ?

Any thoughts or ideas on this ?

Thanks

Baldwins are 5mic. I dont think that guys knows what he is talking about. I have not read or heard anything about Cummins owning Fleetguard, and surely not that a 10mic filter meets there specs. It makes no sense that they would originally spec a 10 mis and then say it was not enough filtration and reccommend a 7 or 5 mic then go back to a 10 mic.

I have a Fleet Gaurd oild and fuel filter sitting inmy closet, after the next oil change I am going to start running all Baldwin filters. Air, Oil, Fuel, and Tranny.

I don't know...The oil filters that I bought say Fleetguard/Cummins. He said that they install the Fleetguard fuel filters on all the cummins trucks/engines that come into their shop

Well, the website for Fleetguard is www.cumminsfiltration.com, if that doesn't say ownership than I don't know what does. You can also read the "history" under the "about us" tab on their website if you would like more information.

The Fleetguard 10 micron fuel filter used to be the recommended specs, but now they've changed it based on the number of fuel system issues that have been had on the common rail 5.9's, with the mass injector replacements on numerous 06 MY's being a prime example. You want to run at least 5 microns, but adding an aftermarket filter with an even lower filtration would be even better. If you don't trap those particles in the filter, than they'll flow right through your injectors that are pushing 20k+ psi. Think of how sandblasting removes rust from metal, well those big uncaught particles are doing the same thing to the ends of your injectors, and it's not a pretty picture.

Hi hector!

The Fleetguard part # FS19856 Stratapore fuel filter/ water separator is a (7 micron) for the 03-'07, 5.9L Dodge. However, You would be better served by using the (5 micron) Baldwin part #PF7977.

I just ordered filters today. It was my understanding that the Baldwin PF7977 is the way to go if there was a choice in fuel filters. For oil though, Fleetguard got the nod.

It'll be my first fluid change owning the truck so I'm still learning too. There's a ton of reading.

Yes, I bought 2 of the Baldwin #s you listed. I just didn't know why The guy @ Cummins/Fleetguard filters said that the FG. F.F.#FS19855 rated at 10 microns at 80% (whatever 80% means) would say that 10 mc was within Cummins specs. If the Baldwins are better than the Cummins filters. I'll stay with the Baldwins

I asked this not too long ago and no one was certian. I would assume it is at least a 7 mic if not better. Baldwins tend to be one of the best filters on the market that you are not required to changes housing for.

The Fleetguard FS19855 Fuel Filter is for 2000-2002 trucks is 10 micron but they to should use the newer 7 micron filter for better protection. The Fleetguard FS19856 Premium Fuel Filter is 7 micron and can be used in 2000 to 2007 trucks with the 5.9L engine. I can buy Baldwin PF7977 locally cheaper then I can buy a Fleetguard fuel from Geno's.

Don't know about FS19855 for 2000-2002. I gave him my engine # & that's what filter (according to Fleetguard) matches my engine #
