I know I am most likely in the wrong forum, but how often do you guys change your fuel filters? I did my 15,000 mile change and it was pretty nasty.

Anyone do it more often? Say every 10,000?

Thanks in advance!!

I do mine on every other oil change, only takes me about 10 mins and the added protection makes me feel better. I haul in alot of small towns and have to stop for diesel fuel at some not so brand places and worried that I might get some bad fuel so I just change mine when I do the oil.
I change my oil every 3500-4000 miles so my fuel filter gets changed so every 8000 miles. It is not need that often but my second incomes comes from useing that truck and I never know what kind of fuel I am getting sometimes.

I've had 2 oil changes so far.
Right at 9,500 miles currently.

Next oil change scheduled at 12,500 and am going to change the fuel filter then as well.

After that, I think I'll do the every other oil change route.
Every 4-5,000 so the fuel filter will be every 9-10,000.

Fuel filters are pretty cheap compared to injection pump problems (been there, done that).

phox

I change mine between 10 to 13k miles. They allways look like new, been lucky I guess. :)

I used to change mine every 10K-12K miles, and every time it looked great (filled up at the same station consistently), so I have now extended it to every 15K-17K miles unless I have filled up at many different pumps. Even after 17,500 miles it still looked good.
Wes

For any Noobies reading this thread, Don't I repeat Don't buy your fuel filter at the dealer.
They must think they're gold plated 'cuz they want $47.00 for the same filter you can buy from Cummins or off the internet for $14.00.

I use Baldwin oil & fuel filters... ;D Only like 9 bucks for the fuel and about 5.65 or so for the oil... buy 'em by the case! ;D

Did you have water in the bottom as well?

I change fuel filter every other oil change interval and change oil at 5K or so intervals. Hey, it's cheap insurance. I buy fleetguard fuel filter for 13 and change and baldwin oil for 6 or 7 and change.

~Dave

Thanks for all the input. There was no water in the housing and just the filter was dirty. I use a good source for fuel, but on occasion I have been forced into one of the "other guys".

Just the filter media was nasty, not black sludge, just filth. This was the factory unit. I have replaced with a Fleetgaurd.

I will change this one at 10k just to see how it looks. I currently change the oil every 5k and it seems to actually be pretty clean, but I do not do much hauling.

Thanks again guys!

I used to change oil every 3000 but it got expensive. Changed it once a month or so (I like to drive). So I started changing it every 5000. I don't haul, but I rag the crap out of the truck. I have only changed the filter once and that was at 15K. Hopefully since I am getting a new lift pump they will go ahead and do it for me.
I am going to change the filter on my truck here in about a week. Is there anything special I should know? I believe you must fill the filter before installing it. Is that correct. Thanks -Anthony

I just changed my fuel filter at 22,000 miles. The engine sure runs smoother and better since the change. I guess I'll have to change it more frequently.

I go with Fleetgard. I don't care if it costs more. My opinion, anything else (just about) is like putting a Fram oil filter on your truck. I get my kits through Genos.

http://www.edmzap.com/pages/baldwin.htm That is where I order mine from! Pulled out the invoices so I can give you exacts: $70.92 for 12 oil filters, includes shipping, 5.91 each and 67.08 for 6 fuel filters, includes shipping, 11.18 each. A little off on the fuel filters, ohhh well! ;D Very good filters, I will probably use the baldwin tranny filters when it's time for service! ;D
EDIT: forgot -- the fuel filters are sold individually and the oil come in a case of 12. Just an FYI if anyones interested! The tranny filters are also sold individually, I think they were 12 bucks...
