Fuel Filter

When you guys are changing out your fuel filters what are you using for clean diese? Do you just prime the filter with some diesel from a jerry can or is there something a little more refined that I should be doing when I change this out.

I usually keep a little in a 1 gal can around. But last week forgot. Just put the filter in without draining ,it was half full anyway. No problem.

Hey thanks for the reply, my jet black former fuel filter is gone and a new nice clean white wix happily resides in the canister, now to see if I have any real acceleration with the new filter or if I still drive a big blue slug

You can always make using the priming bulb a lot more enjoyable by cutting off a broomstick and using that to push the primer.

I put the filter on empty, open the bleed screw then pressureize the tank though the tank fill with compressed air !!!10 psi max!!!
Takes about 15 seconds to fill the filter and purge any air.

I keep a can with just enough diesel in it for a service and a camp fire.

I ran a tube down and I completely drain the housing into my oil catch. I clean the water sensor and flush fresh diesel through. Then I close the drain and fill 1/2 - put the filter in and the cap back on.

A while back I started getting some ectoplasmic goo in there (algae/bacteria/bioslime) so I've been more thorough about cleaning things.

Its best to not just pour diesel into a filter then install it you'll get unfiltered fuel into your system.....I pour diesel into the filter around the outside holes that way its filtered then install it
Or put it on dry then use the primer pump.......if your primer pump works

Last week I used my buddies truck to make a delivery to Atlanta got about 90 miles outside of Atlanta and the engine would blow white smoke on the hills and lose power.....got the delivery done and started home a 170 mile trip the power lose got so bad that I didn't think I would make it home the last hill I had to clime before my house was at a whopping 10 MPH.....after getting home I changed the fuel filter first (cheap fixes first) well that was the problem.....told my buddie about this and he said that filter has been on his truck for almost 4 years and he was thinking it mite be time to change it

Diesel fuel additive is usually around my garage, so I prefill filters with it. Fill it completely, there's no need to bleed out the system. I'll prefill, then still pump on the primer a good 20 or 30 times.

I fill the new filter 3/4 way full w/ Stanadyne or Amalgamated fuel conditioner then pump the primer till I hear the overflow valve whistle.

Good call... guess I was trying to apply the external filter method of prefill before you put the filter on
