Had an interesting situation that was fixed by changing the fuel filter. Wanted to see how long you guys are able to go before you need to change filters and if my situation was similar to yours when the old filter was becoming restrictive.

This last month my fuel mileage started dropping. Dropped about 20% from the summer. Thought it was mostly the cold weather and winter fuel. Then the past week I started getting occassional loss of power situations with high EGT's and boost #'s. It would occur once the truck started getting warmed up and when accelerating in gears 3-6. Once the rpms got to around 1900 rpms it was like the computer would override the fuel pedal and defuel and retard the timing (the truck would barely accelerate and EGT's would rise and Boost #'s would increase).

Yesterday it was really bad. Could barely maintain speed on the way home up some hills. Changed the fuel filter last night and took it out for a test ride. All is better now. This morning also showed no signs of problems. Reset the overhead mpg guage and it jumped up from what I had been getting.

Odd thing is the old fuel filter doesn't look that dirty. It's a dark gray, but definitely not black. It also has about 9000 mls on it.

So, how long are you guys able to go without changing the filter?

Beleive it or not some never change it. But most others go somewhere between 10k-15k. I went 11k on my first with no hint of any problems, and I am currently almost at 13k with the current filter. Fuel mileage is still good, but it is starting to seem a little sluggish. Probably time for a change.

I change my fuel filter with every 7500 mile oil change.

I just changed mine as per the owners service manual at 15000 and noticed about a .5MPG increase. IMHO fuel is everthing to a diesel engine good clean fuel can eliminate alot of problems. There is alot of poor diesel fuel out there in addition to that I wonder if winter diesel fuel has an effect on the filter. In the future I will change mine every oil change like GregMc. Anyone have any recomendations on a good high quality filter ????

Mine is at 10K on the filter and it sure feels like its DONE!

I used to change the one on my 99.5 7.3 every 7500 or so. 10K the truck started to run a little rougher, started just a tad harder. Change the fuel filter.....fixed it everytime.

I generally change mine per the manual at 15K mile intervals, but considering they're only $7 or so I've been thinking of changing them every 7500 when I change the oil. Now that I see others are doing the same I may go ahead and do it. It certainly doesn't hurt anything. Same with the air filter (except that could hurt the wallet).

Use to change mine at 10K. Last time filter was wasted, cut it in half to look in side and saw all kinds of black stuff on the inside of the filter. I change mine now at every 7,500 with the oil. To cheep of a preventive not to.

I have been frustrated at a steady decrease in my MPG over past few months. Maybe the filter is the problem? I have 10000 miles. I'll change it and hope it helps the mileage

I'm able to get Hastings fuel filters for 8.48 at my local auto parts store. I also change mine evey time I change oil.

Is changing the fuel filter something simple to do or would you suggest the
shop change it.

I have worked at a automotive jobber for 36 years, so when I bought my truck I called the hastings tech line and they said Hastings filters at 8 microns so I checked Wix and Fleetguard and they are at 10 microns so I think I'll stick with Hastings.
