For the others that may not know, here is a write up about it with pics.
Be aware that lots of guys have injector problems with their truck, stock or bombed.....due to dirty fuel and high pressures in our Common Rail trucks. It's a great idea to mount some sort of filter head between the stock fuel housing and the CP3 injection pump....and put on a 2 micron spin on fuel filter. Fleetguard makes one, but the consensus on here is that the CAT Filter is a little better. I don't think it really matters. But just having another layer of filtration.........at 2 microns is a good thing....to keep the injectors happy for a long long time.

So far knock on wood I haven't had any fuel problems. My filter looks the same everytime I change it. I do use a small variety of fuel stations but have a few i stay away from.
on another note, glad to see my write-up helped another member!

I fill up at a local Chevron that not only is the cheapest diesel in town but he also has truck islands and gets alot of big truck customers, I'm not too worried about fuel quality. I just changed my filter a few weeks ago and it wasn't quite as bad as the link, but not much better. Changed at 10k miles, Fleetguard Stratopore from Geno's and I got the filter socket from them since I don't have a socket that fits. Hey, nothing on my 442 has nuts that big, ok??

I went back and looked at that filter again. It looks like it has algie or sludge between the plets. I can't say that for sure, but it sure looks like what I use to see on supply boats and crew boats. I have a filter in the garage with 13000 miles on it that has nothing between the plets. Its just a little tan in color.
I installed a Racor Marine filter on my Aux tank for that very reason. The aux tank is in the sun all the time, gets hot and cold and surely is making something in there. If I see anything in the racor bowl, I will gets some algiside for the aux tank.

That is what a filter should do .You will find that is what most will look like that comes From 02 up. You would be better off if you ran an 7 or a 5 . It would be better for the injectors .

First time I changed my fuel filter it looked much worse than that...but I don't know what kind of maintenance (or lack thereof) was done on the truck before me.
The second change it was a bit better but still dark as night.
I'm using the recommended Stratapore filter.

The FLEETGUARD part # FS19856 Stratapore fuel filter is a (7 micron) for the 03-'07, 5.9L Dodge. However, You can also get a better fuel filter which is the (5 micron) Baldwin part #PF7977.
