fuel filter change...did i mess up?

Hello all I changed my fuel filter today and I did not fill the canister with any fuel...I only put diesel on all seals and put it back on because the booklet with intructions that came from cummins did not say to put the fuel in. I did prime the bulb a lot and cycled the pump on a few times...it turned on a little rough for 2 seconds then seemed to run normal...
I have read a lot of people on here saying to fill it up with clean diesel almost to the top but I did'nt..the truck seemed to run fine after the 2 second rough start up and all the way 70 miles home...my only thing that is bugging me is that their may still be a little air in there?? i read somewhere that it may burp itself of air and maybe that is waht it did in the first two seconds..again truck runs fine ..but anyone done it the way i did it?? without filling it up with diesel... does anyone think this is fine? thanks for help

All of the air should be out after 70 miles......if you continue to have issues double check everything and make sure its tight. Next time fill the filter it makes things easier.

Not a real problem I don't think, it's more to save your hands a lot of pumping time, and your starter from an early death due to cranking the hell outta it.

Most of the time people crack open the injectors and crank on it till fuel sprays out to make sure all the air is bled out of the system. Not sure whether or not it'll bleed the air out after running it for for a while.

You can also fill up the fuel filter with ATF next time you replace it.

Instructions for proper burping!
Raise hood with engine running.
Find fuel line from filter to pump and milk it while petting the filter can.
Job is done when hear it ahhh.

Kidding, your'e fine. The fuel in filter greatly reduces time to purge air.
Don't believe ATF is called for. See other threads on ATF.

yah when i changed my fuel filter on my 97 i didn't put any diesel back in the canister, but i did have to hit the primer 50 times maybe even more, enought to make my thumb hurt, but after i was done it made a huge difference about 10psi of boost, yah.

I never pour diesel into the filter. I think it's actually worse because you can pour contaminated fuel in there and have it go straight to your IP. It's also much easier and cleaner by not pre-filling the filter. Just lube the gasket, put it on, and hand prime the lift pump till you feel resistance. Doesn't even take that long. On 12v's, if you turn the key to "ON" I don't think the lift pump automatically fills the filter, that's why there's a hand prime.

Never heard of pouring ATF in there. I guess it's for cleaning? Sounds like it's too thick and could damage seals in the IP.

Yeah our 12v's use that piston style lift pump driven off the engine itself, so if it's not running, you'll get no pump action. Yeah it took me about 15 minutes straight of frantic pumping the primer last time I did my fuel filter lol.

As far as putting ATF in the fuel filter, it's something that we used to do for our old farm tractor. Which is good if you don't have any extra clean diesel laying around. Though after poking around the threads about using ATF as an additive and whatnot, I suppose I'll stop using it to fill the filter when I'm changing it (never poured it and ran it as an additive in the tank)...
